Description
How shocking - another Historical AU painting! This is the last of my recent trilogy of Stargate Atlantis Alternate Universe paintings. All are based on other people's prompts from Challenge communities, but all also represent genres I enjoy (Steampunk, Detective Noir & Regency). For the Paintedspires Challenge. The Prompt was "Regency AU, a rendezvous on a balcony"
Influenced by the works of Georgette Heyer, Jane Austen & Bernard Cornwell, my original intent was - Rodney & John escape the Drawing Room, to have a friendly conversation on the balcony. While I was painting, both their expressions turned more serious. My friend ~talietha suggests that Rodney is discussing Byron's The Corsair, while I think John (the one in the uniform) is newly returned from the Peninsular War - and (to use modern terminology) is still somewhat shellshocked. I tried to suggest a little of John's isolation in the painting.
If the costumes are familiar, I based many on the 1995 Pride & Prejudice, and John's is from the ITV Sharpe series. All the background characters are also from Stargate Atlantis (some more succesful in likeness, than others!).
As always, many references from SGA used, though I'm rather pleased that I also drew various limbs unreferenced (those would be the wonky looking ones).

So true!
Hey thanks for the offer, but I'm a really bad penpal (I mean it usually takes me ages to answer and then I feel guilty because I haven't answered ) so it's better if I don't do that.

Man....brilliance in a great wrapper! I love the idea...and all of them look great in their clothes. Though I do wonder what Sheppard and Rodney are discussing. Sheppard looks great by the way, I love how his whole...persona is just darker then the rest of them. The coloring, the clothes, the expression....he's just darker and it fits what you were going for. I also love how you have the minor guys in there...that's really neat too! Great job!

Thank you. It was such a great prompt, I couldn't resist!
My original intent for this picture was Rodney & John having a friendly chat on the balcony, perhaps arguing the latest mathematical theorum. Both their expressions turned out a little too serious so I changed the concept, and changed the colour scheme to match it. My friend is convinced Rodney is critiquing/fanboying the 19th century equivalent of the latest blockbuster, though!

Wow! Congrats on both a breathtaking piece of Stargate art and the DD! I'm honestly in awe. It's flawless and everyone is instantly recognisable. I love the fact that even from the back you can tell who Sam Carter is. It's just amazing. And John...

:awww: Thank you!
I'm really glad you can tell it's Sam. Trying to include so many of them was difficult (some of their faces were tiny - so frustrating!), and somebody had to be facing INTO the room, so it was a challenge
Thank you for the Watch!

I recognize (obviously) John and Rodney. Also Carson, Weir, Caldwell, Ford, and Zelenka. Who is the blond on the couch? And are we sapposed to recognize the blond with her back to us?

THIS IS SO AWESOME. I clicked on it actually because I picked out the Pride & Prejudice aspect of it, and then freaked out with GLEE when I saw it was MCKAY and JOHN! They look the awesomest. They dominate the picture. I love how you drew them! And it looks JUST LIKE THEM!!!

Yay! Thank you! I found this prompt and the thought of putting them all in a Regency setting (but particularly John & Rodney ) was irresistable.

Oh my god. I'm so in love with this picture (and with you). As if Sheppard isn't drop-dead gorgeous already, we have him in an even better uniform. Then there's McKay with that face.
Also, the minor characters!!!
Okay, enough splooging. I'm faving this. Fanart rarely making me go gaga, but this is really above and beyond. (I'm also very partial to AU-placing like this, haha).

Thank you! I love the concept of AUs, and personally, I like the artistic challenge of them, too - plus, this was an excuse to put Sheppard in a rifleman's uniform, and Rodney in evening clothes...

That looks really nice! I can tell who the characters are supposed to be and they retain their personalities. I particularly like how you portrayed Shephard and the woman doctor whose name I can't remember.

One of the most interesting parts of this sort of challenge is trying to translate their personalities & characters into a different place and time. I'm so pleased you think I managed to do that!
