SSTO requires a lot of fuel, and the weight is already very light on the return, and it can dive to make faster like the space shuttle, and then pull up the nose when near landing, when the speed can provide enough lift to ensure the vertical speed is very low. And the ship is enought big, I think crew maybe survived that if there's no fire disaster
