I still haven't seen this movie yet... T_T But I have seen some stuff about this guy, and I gotta say the likeness in your picture is uncanny as usual, great lighting effects...it's so easy to tell it's a picture by you just by looking at the highlights
(that's a good thing!)

Lol. Even more than the sweaty care rave orgy type scene? Wait a sec, I heard lots of complaint about it. I guess I was the only one who liked it.
I agree. Chow was an excellent choice with a solid martial art background for this role. I highly recommend checking out his films. They're easily tracked down via imdb.com.
Thanks again!

The lighting is mostly governed by the reference image from the web. I just had to recreat it on a larger scale.

By the way, what tools did you use? Are there any helpful techniques you might mention, or sites that detail those techniques? I am getting into digital painting and have much to learn as far as technique goes.

Oh yeah, and lots of masking and gradiant work. Also lots of gaussian blur.
Hur and sat adjustment for color tweeking.
quickmask graiant in a lassoed area is also useful.
I don't have a very concise way to approach.

In photoshop 5.5, I stick to the basic 5 sots of hardedge brushes set to 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 ish.
I don't have too much advice as it comes to technique as I am still inexperienced. Try Polykarbon leadhaevy, I know there is a ton of photoshop tutorial sites, I just haven't had time to visit them.
Good luck!

I think it's fine the way it is, the smoke would make it look different. There is not one thing I can think of that needs improvment. Definetly well done and looks spectacular, nice job

If I had the patience I'd go in and flesh out his fingers more, But I have been stearing at this thing on and off between projects for a week now, and I don't want to work on this same image anymore. Too many other basic sketches are waiting for me to finish up. like a cheese cake pin up I want to finish, and a couple of Metal Gear images.

It's so good I didn't even notice the fingers. If you improve it later on that's great, but if you don't in it's current state it's still one of the coolest drawings I've seen. I like it very much

After I found out who he was, I tried to track down movies like Letters to father and Bodyguard from Nang King.
It's good to know more asian action starts are getting noticed in the US.

Dunno... depends on how this thing goes. It can both be helpful and harmful just by how they Asian and Asian actors handle this trend...

You're absolutely right. I can definitely see the precedence of Asian actors being type casted into these roles do be a concern for aspiring Asain actors.

I think it's just now the west think. " Hey there's something new and different! " but how long will it last ? And besides the whole industry is still dominated by west big shots. The Asian actors don't seem to intent making really the best out of their chance by improving themselves instead most of them are just exploiting it in a "grab while I can" attitude... Plus the film industry in Asia just gone colder... well that's my 2 cents ^^

It's a classic theme; cast the asians in a martial art film.
I do enjoy the like sof BD Wong and the school of new comers that are popping up in the entertainment industry herein the US. Almost all have been in supporting roles.
It's had to produce a movie (drama and story driven films) that is a money maker at the same time featuring a minority actor. The easy way to get around that is action flicks, just about any star can look good in a action film. because the general public don't expect a serious story from this genre. Why? Because the film makers knows they can get away with mediocre writing and still sell on the big screen with action movies.
The way I see it, for Asians to be cast into prominat roles, it moslt likely would be indie films with down to earth issues people face on a daily basis. But that's going to be a hard film to sell.
It think...

Well yeah...u mention another sad thing... the falling of Hollywood film industry. Where's all the dreams and good plots gone..?.. What's only left are special effects and business.
As for Asian in prominat roles.. I think it's up to how they do it. The Asian CAN do it, but they need to "evolve" themselves out of their old styles and walk ahead of fashion with their own style. ^^

That's why I think such genre has a better chance in the independent film genre. It's usually where the innovation occurs anyways.
Unfortunately, indie films tend to lack the flare the general market crave.
So, only people active in that genre would be aware of the advancements which occurs there.
As for the mainstream film industry in general, their formula for money makers works, so that is what the industry will stickt o.
Even I go to the theater for special effets. If I wanted drama, I'd wait for the DVD or catch it on cable when its out. I knw it is sad.

Ahh... but I've seen films with both action/plot very good such as Terminator 2, Star Wars, Starship Troopers.. in recent years I think Matrix (Not Reloaded ) and Minority Report is good. It proves great works can still be done... Sometimes I just wanna grab a fan and hit people on the head : when can u stop being a dumb dumb media trash eater ?? Well sorry for the harsh words... but this bad vendor/consumer relationship is making me quite....ill ^^;:

It's the nature of business.
The only way for it to change is if the market stops paying for generic story driven action movies. And people are too dazzled by the visuals to notice.
Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Action movie fan. But I am not losing track of the nature of the industry.
Which makes me quite a hipocrite. But that doesn't make me feel too bad, because I am not out to change the movie industry. I'm just there to enjoy it.
