He had to be inexperienced for the the revealation near the end that the patriots orchestrated the big shell incident to be a repeat of Big(or was it Black? can't remember) Moses as a kind of training for him to become the " ultimate warrior" or whatever.

For the sake of story progression, of course.

The whole simpulation of the Solid Snake Project (a.k.a. Shadow Moses simulation) story line was way out there! I will definitely give them props for one strange storyline.

My question is if the Patriots were the conciousness of American leaders through out history, seems somewhat lacking for them to simlulate this event to create the ultimate soldier. It seems more suitable for the modern leaders, who obviously were being manipulated by this Patriot organization/entity. It didn't seem as noble and grandios as such a cool story element can be.
