Im selftought, I learned it from reality... just studing the black & white light dynamic and I have to learn much more.
You can take a picture, transform in B\W and try to replicate the same saturation and light. This can help.

Great contrast and awesome shading. Might be her left leg is a bit too far at the front so she might fall backwards in that pose. I do like the inky look of the feathers!
