"I cannot believe this shit... We brought on mare here and now she just got two foals. TWO..." Mario mumbled furiously, as he was walking between the stalls of Connie and Gold. His mare was attentively followed him with her eyes, mostly waiting for him to finish his small theatrical act. Connie in the meanwhile was more than occupied with trying to snuggle her human, while Ethan tried his best to keep his injured side out of Connie's attempts for a head bump.
"But you have to admit it is better this way." Ethan commented, trying to soften up his usually cheerful and positive boyfriend. Mario however, just stopped walking and leaned on the fence.
"And what about you? Did it really matter that much?" No matter what, for Mario, Ethan was the most important and this incident might've saved three lives, his boyfriend still got injured, even if it was an accident. He couldn't help but feel furious. And of course clueless how the other man was so calm about it. After all, this kind of injury will keep him away from riding for WEEKS... And he has no time to stay in bed, he should've gone to competitions. And halter class won't solve his problems. They are no world-class riders with a whole equestrian Centre and generations of trainers behind them. Just two ordinary people who worked their asses off to be here, and right now this momentary security starts to fell apart. Mario can keep Gold, that is no problem. But Connie, Connie is the one who needs to show records or Ethan will lose her. Ethan in meantime managed to rule Connie away from her plans and got the mare occupied with some tasty food, so he came over and snapped Mario out of his thoughts.
"You look like a depressed old man when you are lost in your mind. Thinking is not looking good on your face, sorry." he tried to joke, so he let out a smirk, in hope to receive at least a bit of a smile in return.
"How can you be so calm? How?" Mario mumbled, shaking his head. He truly got scared when that little reckless incident happened, but this kind of long-term behavior was not something Ethan usually saw in him.
Did he really get that mentally ill from such a small thing? He himself broke many bones during trail rides, even crashed his motorbike once and that one really looked serious. This didn't. And while Ethan was still trying to shake the negative thoughts away, he knew that Connie's situation was behind this behavior too. Mario knew very well how much he loved the mare and he wanted to spare him from more heartbreaks. But they still had time... Even if not that much, maybe they could find a solution to this problem.

But it was much easier to think than said. That is why Ethan stayed calm, just shook his head with a small, apologizing smile. Mario couldn't help but only sigh at this.
"Gotta see if anyone has dressage class. I could help in maybe. We will see each other later." he added, already turning on his heels. He even just a bit nodded at the people passing by, who were just as surprised by this behavior as anyone who knew Mario would be.
" I guess he is still mad?" Dianne asked, still watching Mario as he exited the Stables.
"Yeah. He really got scared or angry, I dunno. Sometimes happens." Ethan explained shortly, exhaling slowly.
"I understand him though. He knows that I cannot ride, let alone compete in this situation. I am sorry." he rubbed his nose bridge before he closed the stall door behind himself.
"Why are you apologizing? What has happened to you was an accident. Even if it was an unfortunate one, you two still could get Sparkie here. Who knows what could've happened to her and her foals if you weren't there." the woman added, explaining her perspective.
" Sparkie?"
" Yeah, we figured out that name would be fitting for her. No one contacted us about a missing mare or knowing her. I even talked with her breed's registry, but they couldn't give me any kind of answer either. She must've been bred in secret. Just like the Stallion of her foals as we didn't find any of that color in the registration list. Like a family of ghosts, really." Dianne shook her head.
" So will she and the foals stay?" Ethan asked. Even if that mare one was mostly responsible for his injuries, he still cared for her. First the animals and now, it was even more understandable why she reacted the way she did when he tried to catch her.
"For right now, yes. If nobody contacts us, we will take the next steps to have her around. About the foals... I am not sure. They are still just a few days old, and if you ask me, I don't even know if both can make it. The younger one looks really skinny and weak compared to his brother. It's concerning." She answered, pulling her mouth up a bit, showing concern towards the foal in question. Ethan could only sigh at this, shaking his head... It would be a shame to lose such a foal. If the mother survived so far, and so did he, maybe he will be strong enough to grow up as well.
Before Ethan could change his mind and reply anything about the young foal, Dianne turned to him again.
"About Connie though." uh oh, for the first time he got a bit scared. Maybe hearing about his mare from anyone else but Mario could make him come to his senses and understand how deep sh*t he was in...
"She can stay as long as she wants, no need to pay for her boarding, alright? You and Mario are here for so long now, you are almost like family members now. But about that another issue of yours... I know that she has to show records or... You know." she added, nodding carefully, before continued
" If you don't mind, we discussed this issue a bit with the others - mostly Sean and John as they understand show stuff the best here - and if you don't mind and allow, we could help you. I can offer you a rider for her and they could show Connie until you can get back to saddle. Of course, you should be around as you know the horse the best and could share your opinion with the rider. Win-win situation." she explained and Ethan couldn't help, but leave his mouth open for a minute.
" Wait... Why would you do that? I mean, I am sorry to ask it this way, but why? This is not a game or anything easy, and riding a horse would take away the rider's possibilities from other competitions with their horses. Why would anyone want to do that and why would you let that happen?" his questions were serious and right, but Dianne just chuckled as a response.
" To be honest, it was the Rider's idea to ask you about it. She would need help, as she needs to build some courage up to show her best, but as she said, she knows some stuff about Connie, because you always tell her your stories. It might be not the easiest, and every idea has its risks, but she really wants to help. And we agree with her. As I said, you are like family, and we are not just business people. She still has free time in her schedule and riding another horse mostly brings experience. We won't lose anything if we try. But the decision is yours." she finished. Ethan was still speechless for a while. He looked around, hesitating, even glanced at Connie, who was still munching on some hay, before asked again.
" It's Aileen, isn't it?" Dianne only sighed at this, with a smile and started to way away.
"I leave you time to decide. And if you are done, you can tell me or go directly to her to talk about the details..."
