thanks for the comments everyone! about the pencils... before i had enough money for my Prismacolor pencils, i used this cheap brand called Prang that i bought at Costco. they are very annoying and tedious to work with on the terrible printer paper i used to draw on (one wrong twitch of the hand and it's unfixable), but surprisingly the result is much smoother and softer looking than any other colored pencil i've used. then again, i'm pretty broke and can't really say i've had much experience with anything high-end.
