Installing guide
Before using these icons
Put all icons you're going to use in a folder that is easy to find and where these icons can stay. You can, for instance, create a "icon" folder in "Pictures" where you place all these icons. A icon to a shortcut is only linked and if you move a icon from it's place, each shortcut that uses this icon must be re-linked.
Windows XP or earlier
There is a chance that these icons won't work as expected on these systems. In Vista, a icon can be up to 256x256 pixels whereas in XP, icons can only be a maximum of 32x32 pixels.
These icons can only replace shortcuts for programs/files. These shortcuts can be placed on to the desktop, in folders or in the Start Menu. Icons on the taskbar or on windows can't be changed.
To change system desktop icons like Recycle Bin and My Computer, right click on the desktop and choose "Properties", click the tap "Desktop", then choose "Customize Desktop...". In the new window, click on a icon and choose "Change icon...".
Windows Vista
These icons can only replace shortcuts for programs/files. These shortcuts can be placed on to the desktop, in folders or in the Start Menu. Icons on the taskbar or on windows can't be changed.
To change system desktop icons like Recycle Bin and Computer, right click on the desktop and choose "Personalization", click the link "Change desktop icons" on the menu to the left. In the new window, click on a icon and choose "Change icon...".
Windows 7
These icons can only replace shortcuts for programs/files. These shortcuts can be placed on to the desktop, in folders or in the Start Menu. In Windows 7, you can also change the icons on the taskbar too, only if they're pinned. Icons on windows can't be changed.
The folder which keeps the shortcuts on the taskbar is located at %AppData%MicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick LaunchUser PinnedTaskBar, paste that in the adsress bar and you'll be taken to that folder. Here, you can change the icons on the programs that are
pinned.

Changing an icon for a program in the Start Menu will change this icon in both the Start Menu and on the taskbar. Shortcuts for the programs are placed in the hidden folder %WinDir%ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu and %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsStart Menu depending on if it's showed for all users or only you. (You can move all shortcuts from AppData too WinDir to aviod confusion and if you're the only user).

How to change an icon
To change a icon on a shortcut, right click on a shortcut and choose "Properties". In the new window choose "Change Icon...". In the new window, at the top, a button is labled "Browse...", click on that. Browse to the folder where you put these icons, and choose your icon. Then press "OK" on both windows and the shortcut should have the new icon.

How do you put it on a Mac? This would be pretty useless on a PC, since System Preferences is a Mac application.

I have only made icons for Windows. I save no experience with making icons to Mac. There is a few programs that converts Windows icons to Mac icons. Someone asked for this icon. I don't know why, as I ony make Windows icons.

Preferably use a PNG to Mac-icon, as Mac supports 512x512 while Windows only supports 256x256.
