Description Final design for my design studio, AGIdeas poster project. I'm still not happy with it but it had to be printed and submitted so I guess it's not going to develop any more.

For a long time I struggled to come up with anything I really liked for the subject quote, "the mind is like a parachute, it works best when open.". Even this started very differently.

Profile reference photo of my head, printed and traced to silhouette, inked, flameyness added (ink), scanned into CS2, liquified, added the cross, reprinted onto white paper, bled ink with a wet brush and added in a little gauche wash (red and blue). Rescanned, shifted the blue spectrum around to orange, scanned in brown kraft paper. The rippling effect was an accidental result of warped paper on a scanner that was so excellent that I had to make it a feature. Added in text, played around endlessly with text position and blending modes for lower half of head.

Total time, around 7 hours (not including the weeks of wasted ideation, beforehand).

I'm happy with the earthy look and warm colour spectrum. It's very much my style (browns, black, red, white, silhouette, ink and photoshop). Wish I had the time to finish how I wanted it, though.

Like overfury, the name of the deviation is a result of working at 800dpi/a3 with 50+ layers. It was so huge, I had to save it across the network to our file server because photoshop was using about 10GB of virtual ram (all the free space I had on my laptop).

I might get a big arse print of it made with out the text.

It's neat... But it looks more like you're on fire. *shiftyeyes*

Not that I'm telling you what to do with your work that you've already submitted, but it'd have been cool if an imagery or silhouette of a parachute kinda seperated from the mass.... I dunno. I'm strange.

Actually, I'm submitting it tuesday. I just didn't want to have to change the comment later. They were really discouraging use of "obvious imagery". They want us to convey the concept of an open mind and opposed to a literal representation of the quote. A lot of people did that sort of thing though. Even a handful of my earlier ones were pretty illustrative of the quote.
Thanks for your input, its actually good to have the opinion of some one who isn't in an arts of design course.

As I said before, I talk too much... Heh heh heh... My pleasure.

Mmmmm.. I see. Thats true. I'm not particularly creative so most of my inputs the norm. But it's obvious you've put alotta work into it. Even if you managed to complete it in only 7 hours... I don't think you wanna change it anyway...

Actually, several weeks went into ideation an thought progression. 7 hours is just how long it took to put this one thing together.

Everyone has artistic creativity, just in different ways.
