Description Art of one of my favorite fanfics - Project Sunflower www.fimfiction.net/story/5170/… by Hoopy McGee

Sorry, another wall of text, short is as follows;
Read fanfic, liked fanfic, drew fanfic.

Now the long stuff. As you can gather if you have seen my galley I kind of use dA as a bit of a journal as well as a place to post pics, so be warned.

Going to bring up something here that I REALLY don't want to but I also feel like I should explain why I am about to post a whole lot of fanfic fanart and not season 4 stuff even though it is currently airing.

Two Weeks before season 4 started my enthusiasm for season 4 was basically zero because of two reasons;
I dislike Princess Twilicorn and what I feel it has done to the show and watching the fandom having constant meltdowns
and attacking one another has left me feeling rather put off. Just because others have a different opinion of something
does not make them a hater OR wrong. I have no problems with people who like Twilicorn and have never said otherwise.

But the fact that an increasing number of people in this fandom think that just because someone has a different opinion on things means they feel they have permission to call them haters and attack the other party regardless of how the other has acted (or like me and are just innocent bystanders). It shows to me just how far this fandom is falling and continuing to fracture. I am sure there are people who are reading this and thinking "well just stop watching the show if you don't like it!" or "its not going away, deal with it!", or worse "suck it haters!" but that is exactly the problem. The fact is that I still like the characters and the setting and will keep making art in this setting regardless of how the show goes, I'll just do it in my own way.

There is plenty more that needs to be said but quite frankly this topic always seems to go down in flames and as a complete Fluttershy when it comes to talking with people I don't know I don't really feel like getting into a debate on this. I have said my piece, for better or worse, "now lets never speak of it again".

Now with that out of the way I can finally talk about what I really wanted to talk about, this awesome fanfic.

With my enthusiasm waning I was browsing the internet looking for motivation when I suddenly came across a short fanfic with ponies and humans (not going to tell you which one, going to make it a surprise for later). It was really short but it amazed me about how good it was. I probably have to apoligise to all the writers out there, I've tried fanfics in years past but after reading a couple of really bad ones and no good ones I had came to the conclusion that fanfics just weren't worth my time, and avoided them completely. But with gathering interest I heard about another story that had inspired this writer and decided to give it a shot.

Project Sunflower.
Hooked me completely, as soon as I finished it I started it again and it stopped me from drawing for a week which is quite an achievement. Don't know if I can really say all the things I liked about this story but i'll try a few.
Traveling between worlds is something I enjoy seeing, and the black tide makes a very interesting adversary compared to what we usually see. Love the fact that humans arn't stupid warmongerers and actually act intellegently. There is actual long lasting consequences to actions like with a certain hotel owner and her daughter. There is more but this text is long enough as is.

Cant have the good without the bad though, thankfully most are just personal preferences rather than the story itself. The one that gets me the most is Malachite. I never found anything wrong with him but like if you see some peice of art it looks fine, but something in the back of your mind says that something seems off and you cant explain what. He just never really clicked for me.

One thing that I like the most was probably the character portrayals. They seemed believable, in-character and reacted to situations as you think they would. 5 or 6 times I was ready to roll my eyes as I thought the story would go down a familiar trope or stereotype but was thrilled as any eyerolling moments turned into plesant surprises and really bumped the story up a few knotches for me.

Now as for the art, what I originally wanted to do was a big movie poster type of thing, but as I haven't really painted anything in a few months and it has never really been a strong point I decided to just do a few peices of line-art instead. But even for that I need some good refs to go off of.

As from what I can tell Sunflowers character was made in pony creator, and while pony creator certainly has its uses I felt it was really too basic to work with so decided to make my own.

Getting the hair to fall properly in 3 different perspectives and have it still look good was a mini nightmare and a bit more challenging than I thought it would be. Took a few artist liberties but feel its still somewhat recognisable to the orignal ref (I hope).

Saved myself some sanity on the tail by only doing the left and right. But even still, hair, why you have to be so hard!

Was thinking about doing a light color shading like the last 2 line-arts I did but I never really got a response from anyone if it worked or not so I left it as is.

With the refs out of the way I've done 3 Sunflower pics in the last 1-2 weeks and should begin to put them up very soon.
Also done an OC piece for myself and 2 of the other fanfic in the last week. (They are all about 90% done, so no release all at once)
Trying to make myself post pics sooner. At least this stuff is only 2 weeks old instead of 2 months like I usually would.

Not sure how I can really contact Hoopy or show it to anyone who would be interested in it since I don't have a fimfiction account, and I am the type of person that would make fanart and not show it (don't judge me!)

If you have read this far then Thank you! and I hope if you have never read it you give it a shot. A few months ago I never
would have dreamed about bothering to read ANY fanfic, let alone make a bunch of art for one.

Wow... Very cute! I like your take on her!

I'm glad to hear that you liked the story! It's always gratifying to hear that my stories have made someone happy.

Yeah, the original concept for Sunflower was made up in the pony creator. I was just playing with it one day, while I was also thinking of the character I wanted for this story, and suddenly there she was. I picked a messy mane, because I was thinking that she probably wouldn't be all that good at grooming her mane and tail, especially at first

So, that's all I had for her for a while was a pony creator picture. Whenever I see picture of her that's not from the pony creator, I get absurdly happy (like I am now!).

For what you said about the fandom, I think I know where you're coming from. There are fans that refuse to admit that there may be weak points or problems with the show, and when someone says "I don't like this", they take it as some kind of personal insult.

Personally, I'm... well, I'm okay with Princess Twilight. I would have preferred if she had stayed a unicorn, though. But I'm still enjoying the show. And, though Season 4 so far has had some pretty weak episodes compared to seasons 1-3, I think it still has been pretty good. But I know that is just my own opinion, and it doesn't bother me if other people don't share it.

If you don't like season 4, then you don't like it. Anyone who says that you are a hater for having your own opinion is just being silly... it's an opinion, it can't be wrong. If you don't like something, you don't like it, and you don't need to defend why you dislike something any more than you need to defend the reason why you enjoy something else.

That's one of the reasons why I like the fact that the pony fandom is so huge. It helps to approach it like a buffet. There's all this amazing stuff out there, and some not-so-amazing stuff as well. Take what you want, and leave the rest

Thanks!

Yeah, you did a great story and rekindled my like of drawing ponies, so its hard for me to ask more than that.

I went from drawing stick figures to were I am now on the motivation of drawing ponies, usually always for myself, but if I can use some of that motivation and give something back then I will.

Hope you enjoy them!

Ahh so that's what is with the messy hair, I never thought of it in that way but now that you say it, it does make a lot of sense.

Your right, to me season 4 hasn't been THAT bad I suppose and definitely has its funny moments, even with the purple giraffe in the room
Normally it wouldn't bother me but I guess after hearing the fandom complain for so long its like adding a drop of sand each time, eventually you end up with a mountain and something has to give. I think i"ll take your approach and just look for stuff I enjoy (that and stop reading message boards when I'm bored between drawings).

Thanks again.

Definitely a descriptive description.

Definitely like the first part.

The only problem I've ever had with fiction in general is forcing myself to read them, which is kinda funny based on how much reading I actually do.  I guess if the text was a long as it is in a comic, it probably wouldn't be so bad, but comics can convey so much more detail that can be visually acquired so much more speedily. The old "a picture is worth a thousand words," not necessarily always true, but they can do a lot. I still need to finish the next chapter of my own fan-fic Letter From the Queen. If I keep writing after this one, I'll probably keep them close to episode-length like my At the End of Rainbow's Rainbow, which is probably about 33% longer. (Almost everyone writes at least one sad-fic for Rainbow Dash, right? )

Yeah, I definitely want to keep the descriptions to a minimum in the future.

Hmm, cant say I've ever had that problem. My biggest problem with reading stories is that I stop doing everything until I finish it.
Comics are very convient I admit. A very good concept artist says that books are like free ideas, simply because you are given a description and have to visualize it own your own, were as a comic has a lot of the visualization done for you.  I find both mediums are good in what they do.

Ah yes, you write fan-fics as well. Always good to see people branching out and creating stuff in different mediums, I'll have to add your fics to my long list.
Well, even if not everyone writes a sad-fic everyone has probably at least thought about it, sadness can be a very powerful emotion when used in the right way.

I hear that.

I definitely agree with that. I probably just haven't done it enough to really appreciate it, (which is kind of ironic since I like the actual writing part ).

Hopefully I can write some more eventually. I think I'll be winding down on Letter from the Queen after a couple more chapters.
