Description
The granite rocks of Spitzkoppe, Namibia, in the late afternoon. This is actually a cropped version of a full 360 degree HDR panorama (consisting of 81 photos; 27 vertical photos bracketed 3 times). The crop is equivalent to about 51 of the photographs (17 frames at 3 bracketed exposures).

This was my first HDR panorama; quite a long-winded process. Each bracketed set was processed in Photomatix, then tweaked individually to a matching global tone (HDR changes the resulting brightness levels) across all frames, then stitched in Photoshop.

Yes, I am going back again next year for my honeymoon, and can't wait for it!
I used the 24-70mm on a crop body, so not very wide really. For panoramas its important to use a lens without too much barrel distortion at the edges, otherwise things will not line up well when you go to stitch them together. Ultra wide lens like the 10-22 have a lot of distortion; they're fine for taking a single shot, but not so much for stitching panoramas.

Thanks, see the description. I used Photomatix for the HDR and Photoshop for the adjustments to make the HDR results uniform and for the stitch.

Really impressive. Apart from the clouds that are slightly OTT I think the HDR has been done very subtly - just enough to bring out the colours and texture. Personally I like that "OTT" effect of the clouds too (I've done it myself a few times).

I've just got back into photography after many years and I can't believe the difference between then and now (35mm film sent off for processing). You couldn't process your own work (well not in colour) so the idea of a panorama like this would be unthinkable and the thought of being able to tweak any part of the image would be down to you at the time of the shot ie filters double exposures etc.
So I'm a traditionalist, who condemns any such interference with the real image or scene that is in front of you? Not a bit of it. In fact quite the opposite; I think my time out puts me in a good position to really appreciate what's good about digital photography and this, for me, exemplifies everything that is good about how far digital photography has liberated the individual to not only record the scene in front of them but to also respond to it, both during and after the event.
I love this panoramic, I think the decision to crop it was probably the right one because with too wide a shot you start to lose the advantage gained from using the vertical format. I love the HDR processing, In my opinion, I think it has been used judiciously and I don't feel that it is overdone at all. In fact quite the opposite, it enhances and adds to that immersive quality that make good panoramas so wonderful.
My only criticism of this would be that I want more, it's not big enough! I want to be able to zoom in forever. I want to see what's behind that next mountain. Great image, more please

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. In my opinion an HDR is only overdone when halos start to become present, artefacts start to appear or when the tones that should appear the same no longer are. I do not think this image is overdone as the shadows are still present where they should be, highlights are where they should be and there are no artefacts or halos present. All I have done is to bring out the detail in the highlights and the shadows so that the viewer can appreciate the textures present throughout.
Perhaps it is just that you don't like HDR imagery, and are labelling this as overdone simply because it is HDR.
Anyway, thanks for your comment and fav

Fair enough. To me HDR is intended for improving what the lenz can not capture but the eye can. I am not much of a fan of HDR that are not belieaveable to the eye. To me this image is nearly perfect, and as an HDR intended to appear as such it is supurb. I guess we have differing opinions of the inteded uses for HDR. Cheers!
