Description
I was Max from Where the Wild Things Are for halloween, it was so much fun!The costume was made out of a fuzzy blanket so it's really warm which is awesome. The front has velcro closures & the tail is stuffed with the scraps from making the costume & the hat is detachable, so I can foresee myself wearing it to school on really cold days. Yeah, I have no shame like that.

It's actually ridiculously easy! I made this costume earlier in the day ON Halloween day and then wore it out that night, hahaha. Just be warned, I don't use patterns and I basically made this up as I went along, so you might need to do some trial & error. Seeing as you are already thinking of making the costume though, I think you'll be fine! Also, if you have any questions about my undoubtedly murky explanation, just let me know. :]
Basically, get a bunch of white soft fabric (I think I may have just bought a blanket, to be honest, which is awesome because it is SO SOFT AND COMFY to wear!), wash it, and then lie down on it. If you have a friend with you, ask them to make an outline of you on the fabric (chalk is a good idea for this, since it washes off), and make sure you are marking the side of the fabric that you want to be inside & not seen. It's a bit trickier if you're by myself, but just try to manage best you can, hahah, that's what I had to do.
ALSO! Remember to leave space around your outline so that the fabric outline is big enough to wrap around the sides of your body when you go to sew it. I only left a bit of space, and the costume is REALLY tight because of it. It still turned out cute, but I was afraid of something ripping throughout most of the night, haha.
After making the outlines, basically, replicate what you just did on another piece of fabric. One side will be the front, the other side will be the back of the costume. Sew the sides together & remember to NOT SEW your feet/hand/head holes shut! You can hem those if you'd like, or leave them rough, depending on how you want the costume to look. On this one, I think I hemmed the feet holes, because they get more wear walking around & what not, but left the arm holes rough, mostly because I'm lazy, but it also looked cute.
For the button closure on the front of the costume: Cut down the center front of the costume until you can easily wiggle in & out of the costume. On my costume, the left side of the cut is where I sewed the big black button. Now, take a strip of left over fabric or something and sew it onto the part of the center cut that will be underneath the part with the buttons on it (on my costume, it's the right side of the cut). This way, the fabric should be overlapping and you'll be able to make closures on your costume. After you sew this on, put velcro on the outside/top of this piece of fabric, and on the inside/bottom part of the fabric with buttons on it. The top piece will have oversized black/grey buttons, like Max's costume, and the lower piece will go under and have velcro on it so you can get in/out easily... also, making button holes is a huge hassle, so velcro was the winner, hahaah.
The hat/hood is separate from the costume which is fun because you can wear it by itself. One of my best friends ended up taking it & he wears it all the time, hahaha. To make the hat, you'll have to do another outline of yourself, this time the general profile of your head. Once again, make the outline bigger than your head, because you need room for it to go around your head, and I think it looks better really big, rather than snug. (If you were making a costume of Finn from Adventure Time, I'd suggest the snug fit.) You'll have to do two outlines, one for each side of your head, and then sew them together, leaving the area where your face & neck go un-sewn or only hemmed. The bit of fabric under your face where the hood connects to itself can either be sewn together, or you can put velcro on either end so that it's another closure spot.
I think the thing that took me the longest to get right were the ears on the hood. They're hard because you want them to stand up by themselves and to also look like ears and not horns or something. Mine kept flopping over a lot or the placement just looked wrong, so play with these for a while to figure out what looks best for you. Hopefully, you can see in the picture that there's the ear part, and then a piece of fabric coming off the ear and sewn onto the hood. That makes sure they're securely sewn on. The ears are stuffed with leftover scraps of fabric, so you don't really need to buy any stuffing. Yay, being resourceful!
The tail is another piece that I sort of played with for a while before getting it right. It's basically another two pieces of fabric sewn together. The pieces should sort of look like really elongated pointed ovals. Once you sew them together, remember to leave a hole so you can stuff it full of more scraps to make it nice and fluffy! I'm sure people use fake fur or something more furry for a more accurate depiction of Max's wolf suit, but I was short on time & money. After making the tail, figure out where you'd like it on your bum so that the length is good, and then sew it on, and you're set to go start a rumpus for the night!
This probably sounds like a really rough/unfinished costume because it doesn't have a lining, parts of it don't have a hem, etc, but I sort of like it like that. Personally, I like that it's OBVIOUSLY home made and rough around the edges, because Max was a kid, his mum probably made the costume for him, and he's gonna mess it up pretty fast.
Have fun causing a ruckus in it though! (and then probably falling asleep in it, because it's just so darn comfy)
