I had a bit of a problem when I was assigning Mellow as being a descendant of the Swamp Inklings due to the fact that she doesn’t have the “lobed leaf shape” ears that I made in my Swampling concept. And since she doesn’t appear in Eshki’s life until the latter started living in the Splatlands, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to make Mellow be a mix of Splatlandian and Swampling descent, hence why she doesn’t have the speckled look on her tentacles and her ears are the shape seen on Inkadians and Splatlandians. I also noticed that her eye colors were the reverse of what I planned for the Swampling concept 😂 However, the double colored eyes in the concept was a display of the same condition that could happen to a Swampling, but rare. For Mellow, there’s nothing special about her eyes as some would think. She pretty much shares a similar place of origin with Dyna, but both had different reasons for leaving.

When I was making this reference, I wasn’t able to continue for a bit, due to not knowing what footwear she wore. When I first drew her, it was from the hips or waist up, so there was no need to think of what shoes she wore at the time. For some reason, I was drawn to the Hunting Boots while playing the game. I’m guessing they intrigued me for a bit, despite not caring about it. Then I was like, “what if Mellow wore this? I gotta see how well it works,” then I felt so satisfied with the choice. I didn’t expect the boots to fit so well on Mellow, but it just did! The Hunting Boots on her look like she was meant to wear them!

Origin - Due to her people’s distrust of her being a capable fighter in battles because of her insufficient skills, Mellow left the Swamps and decided to live in the Splatlands instead, which had a majorly contrasting geography. This event pretty much happens months after Eshki started living there too, around Chill Season. She became more prominent as a Charger Main in battle and became a thorn on Eshki’s side for a while until Mellow invited her to hang out more and they joined in battles together as part of the same team. It took a while for Eshki to open up more to her, but as soon as she did, Mellow was able to fully play the role of her friend and emotional support. She became the only Inkling friend that knew Eshki personally, just like how Nero was the only Octoling friend that did as well.
