Birthday gift for my niece who's turning 5.I gifted the older She-Ra custom I've made to this niece's mom back in 2010, and once they moved up to my area here this lady's been fanatically talking to me about commissioning me for lots of She-Ra and Rainbow Brite customs. I silently yet indirectly hinted to her that I'm not going to let close family pay me for any customs, so instead I'm gifting a small collection of She-Ra and Rainbow Brite customs to this family this holiday season. I've got a Birthday in November which this pink Swiftwind is for, Christmas, then a Birthday in January... so I'll be spreading these gifts out a bit.
Wanted to make sure I got this styling-sized Swiftwind done well before the November Birthday, so I did just that and here she is.
Pony base is a styling-sized generation 3 Pinkie Pie.
I carved holes above both shoulders, and one in the forehead for the wings and horn. Wings are framed by a very sturdy wire, with fabric shaping the rest of the wing. White, beige, magenta, neon pink and golden rod yellow feathers are glued to the fabric.
Not a easy task one bit. It really isn't as simple as "glueing feathers to fabric"... it requires tons of trial and error, and getting the feathers to layer and lay just right to get them to work as a functioning piece.
I hand-crafted the mask out of real leather, painted the gold portion with a base layer of orange acrylics, then metallic gold acrylics and a couple layers of gold glitter acrylics. White portion is a custom blend of white acrylics I made and the pink portion started with a base layer of a soft medium pink covered in a few layers of magenta, kissed with neon pink acrylics. Detailing is done in beige and cream orange ribbon. Mask is permanently fastened to the pony face by pins I bent inside of the pony's head of which I drove into the rubber of the pony with pliers. Would have killed the hands otherwise.
Eyes are several layers of blue, gray and neutral muted black acrylics. Was going for something bold, basic, yes dramatic for the eyes. I textured soft features in purples, oranges, medium browns and turquoise around the eyes and pierced it all with metallic pewter acrylics.
Hair is 3 packages of full length Barbie hair in the colors of Chromatic Pink, Sugarless Gum Pink, and Mauvelous Pink (looks more like a pale lavender). I anchored wire into the rubber of the pony and threaded various types of pearl beads as a persona flare detail to the tail, still keeping in mind that this custom will be handled by a 5 year old.
I repeated the mask patterns onto the feet of the pony in more gold textures- orange, metallic gold and glitter gold acrylics lined with magenta.
