Something tells me that Simon is still around; he's in the Ice King, somewhere, trapped within the labrynth inside his brain, struggling to find a way out... but he's slowly losing the will to do so. But he can still see what the Ice King sees, and at seeing Marceline, he's found a newfound energy to find a way out.
And, someday, he will...

totally agree, I feel like if there was no hope for Simon returning the people who make adventure time would not have even delved deeper into Ice Kings backstory. There has to be some purpose as to why they are telling us all this. Simon has to come back! he just has to!

There is always Marceline having a one sided crush on Simon as a child. Maybe even wishing to be Simon's princess when she grew up.
That's the only way I can think of to make the ship not weird. But anyway, lovely picture. Ice King's way of laying on the couch is particularly nice to look at.

Do the ship-thing, but only if you feel like it! It doesn't matter what other people think, it's what you like that matters. I'm a little curious about how it could be successfully pulled off without making the characters ooc, but if someone managed it, more power to them. They're both cartoons anyway, so pairing Marceline off romantically with Ice King wouldn't be any more harmful than doing the same with say, Princess Bubblegum or Finn. You like what you like, and that's all there should be to it. <3

Because it's basically the only thing keeping the Ice King alive. I only reason the Ice King survived the Mushroom War was because of the crown. If it was destroyed, the Ice King would die.
