Tarina's Tale #9: A Virtual AdventureHumans amaze me sometimes--I didn't know you could interact with the pictures on TV!
See, I was taking a nap one day, and heard Brock say "No, not the Smash Ball!" from downstairs. I was interested--what was a "smash ball!"
I crept downstairs to see Brock, Ash, and another of their friends all fighting with various Nintendo characters. The other boy was playing cheerleader, Ash was using a Lucario that was firing a massive blue beam at the Link Brock was using, sending him flying off the stage.
"GAME!!!" the TV announced. "This match's winner is...LUCARIO!!!!"
Brock sighed. "You win again, Ash...why can't you let me get a Smash Ball for once?"
The other boy spoke up "Did you remember your SNES, Ash?"
"Yes, I have it." Ash assured him as he carefully set a grey and purple box on the table before the TV. "Will we have to disconnect the Wii for the SNES to work?"
"Nope--just hook it in the switchbox's AUX 1 switch." Brock assured Ash.
"How were you able to make the pictures move?" I asked as Ash carefully wired the box to the TV.
Brock picked up a controller connected to the box. "See this thing with all the buttons? That's how we can interact with the pictures on the TV." With that, he handed it to Ash as the words "Jewel Chronicles" appeared on the TV in ornate looking letters.
"We are now entering the Hall of Mirage." Ash explained as the screen displayed two boys and two girls in a line entering a cave filled with twisting paths.
"At this stage in the story, the heroes are seeking their third gem to forge the Sword of Rainbows." Brock explained. "But it's inside this cave, where one wrong turn gets you lost in a maze."
The other boy consulted a book for a moment. "If you're really stuck, you have two options--cast Light to return to the entrance, or have Aina sing the Lay of Truth to summon a fairy to guide you for a short time."
"Which one's Aina?" I asked as Ash guided the line of tiny humans through the twisty passages.
"The one with a feathered hat like you." Brock explained as he sketched Ash's route on a piece of paper. "She's a minstrel, which means she can sing songs that hurt monsters, heal the other heroes, and other helpful things, such as summoning a fairy to guide you if you're stuck."
"However, every song takes power, and the map song takes a lot of power." Ash cautioned. "So I'm saving her power for fighting monsters."
"Good thing you bought 99 Strong Magic Salves in town." the boy agreed.
Just then, the screen swirled into another screen depicting the four heroes in more detail against a group of three red skeletons. "Now we're in battle." Brock explained.
"Remind me what red skeletons don't like, again?" Ash asked the boy as his warrior slashed a skeleton for 30 damage.
"Unlike normal skeletons, red skeletons resist physical attacks, so magic or Aina's songs will help." the boy red from the book.
Ash nodded, selected "SONG" from the first girl's menu, and then selected "Ruby Rhapsody" from the list. I watched, amazed, as the wave of fire defeated all three skeletons at once!
"Wow! She's strong!" I gasped.
"That's because Ash trained her a lot before going in." Brock explained. "It's a long dungeon, and the monsters are pretty tough in here.
We never did make it through the dungeon--but Brock tells me he has the game on the Wii--so maybe I can see just how Aina got that strong.
