BEGINNING (You are here) | ---> Next

Their time spent together in the cave had helped them to bond to one another. Carraphim had become less wary of Azar, and Azar had opened up if just the slightest bit with this newcomer. They talked, they rested together, and when the time came for them to leave, neither said a word to the other. They just travelled together in pleasant silence. They didn’t need to speak to understand what the other wanted. They kept watch over each other the whole way down the mountain, and they paused to rest side by side, flanks brushing, every so often. The evening had been peaceful, the darkness falling over the valley and settling a gentle lull over the land. What Azar thought was strange was how none of the crepuscular creatures were roaming about yet.

The air was brisk, but not brisk enough for a snow storm, he didn’t think. The flurries that started proved him wrong. Those flurries soon turned into heavier snowflakes. However, he hadn’t yet considered the fact that the snow may get heavier. “We should find somewhere to wait it out.” he explained, making eye contact with Carraphim, who just nodded. He’d thought the same thing a while ago, but he’d not thought much of it. He trusted the judgement of the young stallion with him. It was too soon to start making demands and shouting orders. He couldn’t risk a fight breaking out. Not now.

“Which way?” He asked, having glanced back towards the trees. They’d have provided fine shelter. However, Azar was already leading the way across a frozen lake. Maybe he knew something that Carra didn’t. He wanted to tell him to wait, to go back. That they’d be fine. But what point was there in picking a fight? None. None… He couldn’t risk triggering some sort of chaos and losing this sense of security he’d attached himself to oh so quickly. And so he again kept his mouth shut, trotting after his companion.

“This way! I know a place. It’s just across this lake. We have time.” Azar sounded so sure of himself, how could the leopard mustang argue? He nodded again instead, and kept a few feet behind him.

--

The storm came on far quicker than Azar had anticipated, however. Before they knew it, everything was white within a few feet before them. It was frigid, and the two mustangs’ manes whipped about their faces. They had to squint just to keep snow from their eyes. Gusts of wind kicked up the powdery snow around their frames, blinding them effectively.

“This was a bad idea!” Carraphim called, pausing where he was to drop his head against the storm. “We should just go back!”

“But we’re almost there! I swear!” Azar replied, turning his head to look at him. His ears swiveled as he heard a sound, almost like something was cracking. However, he thought it had to have just been the wind. Maybe it was a tree falling. Maybe, they were closer to the shore than they thought. “Just a bit farther!”

Carraphim lifted his head a bit to look at him, shifting his weight to follow. It was hesitant. He didn’t believe him. He heard another crack, his ears falling back. He felt the ice shift beneath his hooves, and he looked down. The snow was being blown about so fast, he couldn’t even see if it was coming from beneath him.

“That doesn’t sound good.” Azar pointed out the obvious, and Carraphim shook his head. He lifted a foot, and just that shift of weight was enough for the ice to buckle. It happened so fast. The ice crackled, and the smaller mustang leapt back and away from the racket. By the time he recovered, the frigid water had swallowed up the other stallion whole, leaving no more than rippling water and the sharp edges of ice behind.

“Carraphim?” He called dumbly, as though that was going to do much. He was overwhelmed by a wave of guilt. No, no he couldn't let this happen. He couldn’t let this slide! “Carra!”

--

Below the water, the darkness was like ink. It swallowed Carraphim up whole and sucked him deeper and deeper. The fluid chilled his eyes and it hurt. He couldn’t keep them open for very long at a time. His limbs fought to try to reach the surface, but each time he came up near the top he was met by frozen ice that he couldn’t break. He couldn’t find the hole he’d fallen through, the darkness blotting out his vision. His chest burned, ached, and he felt the need to breathe in but all that he got was water.

The edges of his eyesight blurred to black, and soon enough all he could see was a little point of light when he tried to see. His muscles seized up and he couldn’t fight anymore. He couldn’t drag his way to the top. But what point was there anyway? Maybe this was fate. Maybe he was too hopeful. And so he let the current carry him, carry him deeper and deeper… Into nothing.

I'll be doing features for horses that have met Carraphim in the past. If you have done art/a story of this character in the past and they're not featured in his art (or even if they are!) shoot me a message either below, via discord, or via note! Whatever you're most comfortable with. I'll be choosing a few to work on backstory for Carra with. Just give me a brief description of the interaction if there's no story accompanying it.

He was formerly Bachelor 19 for quite some time.

And thank you so much!! It's a bit different from anything else I've ever done before.
