Description 2. Bed Hair

You see the world in only grey and black
Now how can anybody live like that
Without screaming
Without dying for dreaming

-Dia Frampton
My younger sister giggled in Yohei's arms. Again, she seemed to have a bad dream and ask me to go for a walk but she wondered off to here.
Yohei still had a bedhead, but I guess I did to. Neither of us cared for our hair; just stayed clean and organized enough. I liked him. When we met in kindergarten, his warm glance melted everyone's hearts and he was actually very popular, but he's not the popular type at all. Yohei didn't have a mom, and he was staying here with his grandparents because his dad worked overseas. He was actually very nervous his first day at school and wasn't used to attention like that. Kids crowded, praised, and played with his hair until he started to cry. I guess someone asked too many questions or something.
I think Hikage, my sister, is the only one he'd let play with his hair now. It made sense, I guess, besides her being young and cute. They had something in common. A gang stole their Pokémon a while back, and no one's really recovered.

This was why people needed to be careful and cherish their Pokémon.

Not that they didn't. Team Plasma was the one who stole them. We just weren't strong enough to stop them. That's why I had to become stronger and protect those I loved.

Yohei's house was small; he slept in the loft and his grandparents slept downstairs. The biggest room was the kitchen and they had an old-fashioned radio that didn't match their new television. Despite the small space, it was rather posh. He had a nice backyard, something most people in town didn't have. It was where we were. Hika ran her small hands through Yohei's hair. He and I were sitting on a swing set, but only I moved since I didn't have a kid on my back. I only swayed back and forth, though, teetering on my feet since my legs were too long for this old swing. Hika came over and tugged softly at my sleeve.
"Aren't you just the cutest little sister ever?" I cooed, leaning over and nuzzling Hika's head and mine together. She laughed and grinned at me before raving about what was trending among her friends.
"Hana's going to get a Pokémon, you know? Her mommy was at the school because Kiki scraped her knee, and she was on the cross-transceiver with a professor! Hiroshi, will it be blue like yours? Will it be red like Yohei's? What if it's green like my jumper?" she gasped.
Yohei raised an eyebrow a laughed, rubbing his chin.
I tilted my head to the side, leaning forward and cradling it in my hands. "A Pokémon?" at which my sister nodded surely. "I hope she takes good care of it. She'll be good friends with her Pokémon."
Things were quiet for a moment, and the creaking of the swing set rudely interrupted our thoughts. Hikage shrugged.
"Y-yeah… Friends… are important," she murmured, wandering off to look for some insects in the garden.
Yohei whispered to me. "You know how the ocean was way cold this summer, and the last? I saw on a Pokémon documentary about how some amazing ice-types will go on rampages and freeze and even eat people and other Pokémon if they are provoked. The people in the documentary started talking about how cold it's gotten but they aren't sure what's causing it, but it obviously isn't natural. Gran was tut-tut ing about 'global cooling' but then I tried to explain to her…"
This reminded me of something from a textbook I was researching two years ago. Wasn't there a town where a fierce ice dragon captured anyone who was out after dark? And the timing seemed awfully fishy. Did it have to do with the Plasma gang splitting up two years ago?
       "…Hiroshi?" Yohei said.
"Huh?" I looked over to him, my train of thought stopping abruptly. Hika was singing a song as she explored the yard.
"Do you have someone you like?"
I froze. Why… why would he ask that? I leaned back on the swing and stared at the sky. My head was back and my lips parted. "That's not really something I've put thought into…" I lied, trailing off with a small laugh. Although, when has anyone said this truthfully?
He nodded slowly, kicking the dirt under the swing. "I'd be lying if I said that. Still, I'm sure I'll meet someone I'd like to spend my life with. Although, I like celebrities a lot more than people I know. Weird, right?"
"Uh-huh." I nodded. His response made me twitch. "Yohei, the world is small. Maybe you will meet a star, but it's more important that – "
       "Hey, brother! Let's see Hana."
" – you love… each other…" I muttered, but stood up and smiled at Hikage. Inside, my heart tensed up. It was so weird to talk about these things out loud. I can't even IM my thoughts. Mom said something about cell phone novelist to me about things like that once.
Weird how at the time, I didn't stop to look at his face then. I can't believe how I didn't notice how tense the air around Yohei became. But who could blame me?
I dashed toward her, but she was almost already out the front door. I waved to Yohei and said goodbye to his grandparents and left. I had caught a glimpse at the clock they had inside that said 11:26.
I turned the street corner to find Hikage had already found her way to Hana's stomach, tickling it with pure joy. Hana laughed, not because she was ticklish at all, which she was not, but because when Hikage laughed, she couldn't help but laugh, too. Hana had the same effect on people. She made people comfortable and relaxed and she shined from just standing there.
It took so much to compose myself and say, "Hi, Hana!" Silly, right?
She and Hikage stopped, but a big smile stayed on her face. Her back straightened and Hikage returned to my side. "Hey, Hiroshi! Off goes Hika and Hiroshi is sure to follow, huh?" Her lips pursed together in an honest smile.
I nodded and grinned. "Of course. You're getting a Pokémon, right? The only other trainer around here is Yohei, so it's getting kinda boring!" Actually, Yohei didn't really battle much. Still, the thought of becoming stronger next to Pokémon was very exciting. I wonder if Hana really would become a trainer. Maybe I'd finally be able to go after Plasma with her help.
Hana gave a small laugh. "Yup! Earlier, Michaela even said 'My flaky fortune telling says you'll meet a Pokémon!' I'm supposed to meet Bianca, but all I know is she's got a big, green hat!"
      "Really?" I chuckled.
"You won't be the only trainer in town now, so start acting like it!" We all laughed. It was true; I always made a point to mention – or as some people would say, brag – that I had a Pokémon.
"Hana… If you get a Pokémon, take really, really good care of it, okay?"
I bit my lip. "Yeah… Hey, Hika, it's getting cold huh? Brr!"
She mimicked me, holding her shoulders and pretending to shiver furiously. Hikage then skipped back home, waving with both hands and shouting, "Have fun with your Pokémon and don't have regrets!"
"I promise! I'll take really, really good care of Hiroshi, too!" Hana waved at her. She hadn't said anything about the solemnness that washed me and Hikage. She didn't have to, and she knew better not to. Both these girls were great at knowing what to say and what to do. They just made people around them happy without any effort. Yohei, too.

I, on the other hand, seem to always mess up.
