Description
This is a commission for ~ArynChris of an angel named Pious. She is wingless and kind by nature. In the worlds where her god isn't the main one, she acts as a healer, but in those where it is, she is the sign of the apocalypse.Corel Painter 9, Wacom Intuos, about a week's time.

I like that she can be in multiple universes and still be 'herself' in a way. She can be in one universe and heal, or she can be in another universe and be an omen of doom. Either way, she's still Pious.

I'm the commissioner and character owner. This would make a cool MtG, I admit, but I'm with Liiga on this. While no one can dictate what you do or do not do privately, please do not post a card of this (or anything else using this work) online.
That said... if you did happen to make a white or white-red Enchantment of this, I'd love a Note with the details. It's interesting to see how others interpret character art.

The angle and composition really caught my eye here. It's very "sweeping," full of movement!

This is stunning!
I see that you use painter. What advantages do find with using Painter instead of Photoshop?

Thanks! The things I like about Painter are its awesome blending tools and the simple interface. Mostly the interface - Photoshop's UI is just weird to learn at first.

Beautiful work of art. Love the color and the background action -- and then the serenity of the angel. Really quite fabulous.

She looks so pure and angelic, hands together in prayer, yet the world is crashing down around her...a beautiful contrast.

wingless... then she is literary fallen... thus she very much speaks of the apocalypse, nice

Thanks! I'm fairly certain the winglessness was a matter of "design", so to say, not a sign of having fallen from grace in this case. It does add a sense of simplicity for the character, as she displays her divinity in other ways than having specific visible accessories that are normally associated with such.

well still... a fallen angle in the service of "god" or something... is really apocalyptic!

*nods* That's one way of looking at it. As Liiga said, the lack of wings is a matter of design rather than a fall from grace. As a healer, she does her work as His representative best by fitting in with earthly beings and not standing out, so that none reject her or are awed out of hand--no snap judgments. As the harbinger of apocalypse and a "Finger of God," it is because she is a different sort of angel. If you look in biblical texts, the 6-winged angels are seraphim, and the 2-winged kind we associate with angels today never actually existed that way. Pious here is a different kind of angel, therefore has never--and will never--have wings.
This painting best portrays, to me at least, how Pious will pray even for the souls of the damned and stay with them through their final moments in the hopes that they will take her proffered hand and seek redemption. She rarely gets anyone that way, seeing as how her God waits until a world is irredeemable before He sets down the End, but she never stops trying. Her eternal wish is that she could be permitted into those worlds ahead of time, to help the people turn the tide against it and save themselves, but divine law says that she cannot until the appointed day.

I love the colours.
It reminds me of the end of the film "the harvest" where the little girl is standing in the middle of a field while the fireballs are falling from the sky.
