So, last weekend we had our little speedpaint tournament for the grand opening ofwas kind enough to let us use his webcampic as a reference for Zuko.
My crazyfast 15 minute version of this is posted in the club gallery, but I wanted to try doing a more serious one, too...especially because I didn't have time to draw the banners during tournament and I love those banners!
So...about 1 1/2 hours total.
Sketched on openCanvas...colored on Corelpainter, then tweaked on photoshop...
..because I guess I haven't been using enough programs lately. XD

Thanks. It used to be one of my weakpoints, too...but I'm getting better at it. The armor still gets me a little...it's not like I have a real example of that to look at.

but fabrics on their own often can be difficult
(so many people struggled on still lifes in art class last year; I'm so jealous of my friend angela, her art is amazing, shaded to perfection, and she can show motion so well, plus she managed to draw a melting chess piece and make it three dimensional-I'm so jealous

I can shade really well if I drawing directly from a reference...like a portrait, but it's still harder for me when I'm making it up.

Yes, working without a reference is frustrating. It's very hard to get it as good as you want.

Drawing without reference takes practice, too...and you just have to sort of make your brain memorize a LOT of information about how all the body parts should look from all kinds of angles.

Not at my highschool, it wasn't.
It's wasn't an easy A. They took it pretty seriously.
You had to commit and do a lot of work to pull off an A in drama and band and choir even.
