I hate all related to smoking, cigarettes, tabacco... So I don't usually draw stuff like this, but I've seen a lot of people enjoying the shikamaru smoking thing and also his non tied up hairstyle. So this is something I did mostly for his fans.

I think Shikamaru eventually quit smoking, right after he learned that he'll be a father. Asuma had stopped around that time too.

¡Dioses! Opino lo mismo que tu en relación al tabaco. Cuando mi madre, o alguien de mi alrededor fuma, le miro con mala cara aunque no le digo no fumes ya que es su vida y ellos mismos. Pero eso sí, me voy pa' otro lao'.

well, that's true. That's the main reason I dont draw him smoking. He just did it for asuma in that moment, I don't think he keeps doing it

I agree- I think that it's something that he did to hold on to Asuma's memory as a type of memorial- after he gets his revenge on Hidan, you almost never see him smoke again (except to light the last cigarette that he places at his grave).
I've always imagined this to be something that he does once a year or so on the anniversary of Asuma's death, not a new habit (plus, there's the whole part about stinking like a cigarettes when you're trying to be elusive and sneaky...)

I imagined that too, It's like a way to remind himself that asuma is still in his life and his memory. I think it's a nice way of showing how much shikamaru cared about asuma. Since I know shikamaru is smart enough to know smoking is bad.
