Description Ok, a little something I wanted to do...
I really respect all the artists that draw Zim in other styles (not close to Vasquez) and even artists that invent many pairings; so it is not an offence to you, no way...
But I personally when Zim is drawn as an anime boy and when somebody draws him holding hands with Dib and looking at him with tenderness...
Sure every artist needs to be creative and put in fanart something of his own, unique...but there must be some reasonable limits! At least that's my opinion!
I don't think that people who develope Zim in anime style and who develope pairings really get the point of the show. The point is in the "ugliness" of the original style and rivalry of the main characters. They can't love each other when they are to be enemies. OK, they may have some sympathy for the energy of the opponent, but they would never NEVER show this to each other, because showing this means showing the weakness. They even can't notice that hidden sympathy (if it only is - I don't think it is) themselves!

Yeah...I'm not that good in writing all my thoughts in English Then here ([link] ) the artist did it very well! I agree!

Thank you very much!

That pic dedicated to one of the hardest problem of fanart - if fanartist has freedom in his ideas (because he's not the creator of characters, but sure he wants to introduce something of his own to them) and if he has, how much he can develop them and still save the idea of their creator.
Wow! That sounds very complicated!

I had a crush on the original zim, and sometimes would draw fan comics of me, but I'd be an insane person like Johnny the homicidal maniac and be trying to destroy zim, like Dib does....Only with my violence.

Anyway, I think some ugly things are cute, so I guess I'm an acception. O.o;

Also! I've been a Zim fan since the begining, giggling school girl, ect. and I remember boys drawing themselves as invaders too! But that's besides the point, which I understand.

I think Jhonen put it best on the commentary, first dvd. Something along the idea of, "All invaders in this picture, I named them all! And you see these kids pop up on the internet, like, invader Billy, and it's so funny to me because it's just...Not real! Heh, you're not an invader," and then Rikki or someone said something like, "Dream-crushing,"

Blah blah, me = ramble.

lol
I must be the very first of Russian Zim fans (because it hasn't been shown in Russia, but I managed to see it ), so I can't tell anything about Zim fans around me (in real life).

But actually it happens everywhere: a lot of cousines of Warner Siblings (I'm talking of Animaniacs, of course), a lot of experiments in L & S, a lot of invaders in IZ, etc. I don't mind that kind of work actually, I don't hate it, but I can't also say I love it. You see, I think it is better to develope main characters (in IZ case it is for example pics of Dib and Zim in new poses, or some funny comics - well, I myself try hard for this kind of work and I think that's what other fans really need from me (as a fanartist) - more Zim and Dib, but not my (one more) OC Invader ) or invent something of your own (new story at all, with new characters, that nobody ever seen before - in my case such characters are Sherri, Penny and other from [link]
lol I used to draw OC for cartoons too (when I was ten ), but then I realised that these two paths (developing and creating) are much more interesting (and harder too - maybe that's why people prefer drawing OC).

I agree. Even it is fan-art (and fanart don't have many limits), it isn't correct and it won't be the same at all.

Though in some occations, some of the fanart being made by people can be pretty funny and awesome, even though they are... well, non-traditional(?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lilostitchfan In reply to EspnB [2007-03-26 18:18:11 +0000 UTC]

Sure I don't except freedom in fanart and changing style, sometimes that could be really useful. I'm always interested to see Zim in original styles, it can be different from Jhonen's, but still unique. But unfortunately usually I meet fanartists who just don't try to invent something new, they draw that popular anime cliche. And it is much easy to make characters look beautiful than trying to make them look beautiful in Jhonen's style or any other, they know that anime style is popular and they can rely on it. And maybe they are afraid to show their own style or too lazy to try to think out something new. But it isn't interesting at all to look at the same popular poses and same popular details - many pics of different artists look very similar, that's sad, because I don't see and creativity in that kind of fanart. And fanart must be creativite. Otherwise nobody would need it.

Well said, Anna.

I know I've been going "huh?" and "WTF, same poses here too!?" plenty of times.
You have a valid point here. If you really want to spread your opinion (which most of the people here seems to be agree with), you should write this in your journal or something. Who knows, maybe we can reduce this kind of... uhm... boring art. (I know, I'm a little bit mean)

Ugh. Yes. YES.

In my opinion, you should learn how to draw the characters fairly well in the original style before you intentionally stylize them. Anything else is being lazy. <_<;

Starlene In reply to ??? [2007-03-24 19:38:41 +0000 UTC]

You're so right. It's so annoying to see all those characters drawn in horrible-looking anime/manga style... I'm so annoyed every time I see Lisa Simpson or Lock/Shock/Barrel as a teenager, drawn in "Read this book and you know how to draw manga!" -style.

And I'm not the best one to write my thoughts in English, neither, as you can see.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lilostitchfan In reply to Starlene [2007-03-26 17:37:55 +0000 UTC]

That's right. That popular copies... and popular things usually become annoying. I hate when something really great becomes too popular.
I can give you a very good example what's now happening to TNBC in Russia. Jack's cute face is everywhere on the bags of many many girls here in Moscow (I meet that Jack's faces everyday several times). And I suspect that some of that girls don't even know who Tim Burton is - that's so awful! They wear that bags only because it is popular now. Not because they really love TNBC and Jack!

And I think your English is good (lol I'm Russian, not English though, so I can't judge )! At least I can always understand you.

Starlene In reply to Lilostitchfan [2007-03-26 18:50:54 +0000 UTC]

x_X I know that, in Finland there's kind of the same thing... There's a joke going around, I've heard it few times:
"There are two about 13 years old girls looking bags in the shop. Another of them finds TNBC bag there and says to her friend: 'What's the point of this? Do you know, that they've done even a movie about this bag!'"
It's so sad, people look me weirdly just because I've got Jack Skellington t-shirt and most of the girls wearing those shirts are the ones who haven't even heard about the movie, and now they're thinking I'm one of those. They really should watch TNBC!

While I am definitely anti-ZADR (*shudders*), I don't mind *some* anime style drawings of the characters. But when they start to lose their original personalities in the process, that's when it starts going downhill for me. It's good to at least get that message out there: Zim and Dib aren't gonna be making out with each other any time soon.

Okay, now I think I need some brain bleach after typing that last sentence.

Anyways, great work as usual.
