Description
Ok, a little something I wanted to do...I really respect all the artists that draw Zim in other styles (not close to Vasquez) and even artists that invent many pairings; so it is not an offence to you, no way...
But I personally
Sure every artist needs to be creative and put in fanart something of his own, unique...but there must be some reasonable limits! At least that's my opinion!
I don't think that people who develope Zim in anime style and who develope pairings really get the point of the show. The point is in the "ugliness" of the original style and rivalry of the main characters. They can't love each other when they are to be enemies. OK, they may have some sympathy for the energy of the opponent, but they would never NEVER show this to each other, because showing this means showing the weakness. They even can't notice that hidden sympathy (if it only is - I don't think it is) themselves!
Yeah...I'm not that good in writing all my thoughts in English

Like, it's one thing if there were just a few of them... but there are TONS AND TONS OF THEM. WHY?!!
Ahem.. anyway... I love this picture, awesome job!

i support the idea of them kinda needing each other (mopiness of doom) but i hate seeing them in anime style more than anything it pisses me off everytime i see one they barely look like them selves ...to those who draw them like that i just want to say this THAT IT AIN'T ZIM or DIB THERE ANIME WANNABEES

You speak truth.
I am a big slasher, but i just shiver in fear everytime i trip with a ZADR... i mean, they are KIDS, god damn it! I don't like any pairings of JV's works. i can't tell why, but i also do not like the weird-looking anime style people gave to Zim and Dib and the other characters (me dont even like anime)
So, people should respect at least a little bit of the original trama, of the esscence of the story... at least something, damn!

I completely agree with you...
I mean, the style and idea of IZ is what makes it so popular (I guess)... And I don't like any pairing (even if it's gay or not, I don't like when artists make pairings from this show)... And, I think that JV is not that romantic kinda' guy, I guess...
Anyways, I agree with you completely...

First off, I'd like to say that I like this little comic here. Not only because it's made in the original style, but for the composition, the perspective, the expressions and the overall look.
I read through your description and through the numerous comments, because the diverse opinions are very interesting. I respect you a lot, because instead of destroying something you don't like, you tend to be rather open-minded about it (which is not seen often enough, sadly) and even create something out of it. Cookie points for you!
As for the anime/manga debate... It's not only the Invader Zim universe that suffers from it. There are still too much people that stick to a pre-made style for lack of originality, self-esteem or just talent. We only have to hope they'll manage to find their way someday. I went through the hardcore anime phase, where I learned about proportions, perspective, positions, clothes folding, hair, facial expressions, etc. I've kept a bit of it but managed to find my own style after that, which is the natural way of progressing (I think).
As you said, fanart is for exploring. But I don't think we should limit what is acceptable and what is not, because everyone has their own opinions. Once something is published / thrown to the public, it belongs to the collective minds and the author can't stop the ideas and concepts that go through the viewer's minds, because the possibilities are infinite. Fanart is creating what the show inspired us, and there is no limit to the imagination.
I've been a ZADR fan for a couple of months, now, and I'm still amazed at the diversity that can be found in that pairing. (I can't speak for the other ones, don't know them, so I'll stick with the day's subject ) Yes, we know it isn't canon, and that it'll never be. But that's the fun pat of it: the challenge. How to make two deadly enemies, two guys from different species, get along? You base it on what's already there: the pursuing, the stalking, the obsession, the endless rivalry. I've been drawing fanart and writing fics, always trying to keep their personalities (or how I perceive them) in mind. Of course, there'll always be artist that render them completely OOC (overdose of fluff being one of the principal reasons) but that happens everywhere, you just have to ignore it and look for the good stuff.
I know you don't like slash, but if you're curious, I invite you to browse through these artists' galleries: *neofox ,~Keefs-My-Gay-Hero and *TheSmallestInvader These are only examples of good artists that manage to render the pairing in their own style. Of course, you'll always be welcome in my gallery, it's not all slash in there! (...a major part, but not all, lol)
It's a pleasure to discuss with you

Thank you very much for your kind and extensive comment! I'm really sorry I answer to it only now...
Yes, I've noticed how many characters from different fandoms were chibified (and sometimes I really liked the versions that looked both cute and pretty original, that was gained by the clever mixing of the original style of the character and anime), but I don't like when people use the same "cute"models, they just don't feel like trying something new and learn something new, they like that model and the attention they get and that stops them in their way to improving. That's sad. And I don't think it's bad to use anime style to learn something new from it, if you feel that anime helps you (you're not just drawing the same once again), it's great!
The worst thing that could happen is IMHO OOC. It happens even in some sequels (official - and even creators of the original story may take part in it - that happens for example with Lilo & Stitch the series), so I'm not surprised there are so many OOC in fanworks. OOC usually simplifies characters, yep, they act once again according to some models...
I have to say that ZADR seems to me something close to OOC. I know there are different kinds of ZADR fans. Some really make it interesting...
but dunno, I just don't like the idea of making them gays. I have nothing against gays, but I know that originally Zim was normal I've never noticed anything that would show that he may love men.
I don't mind that he secretly respects Dib (so secretly that he would never confess in this to himself), but we can see that several times he even tried to ask for Dib's help. It's pretty interesting, because it is psychology. Dib and Zim are similar in some points. So if fans really like that idea, they may try to make them partners, affiliates. Once it even happens in the show. But I would never understand why do they have to love each other. It makes it pretty sensational, but there is no need in making them lovers. That's my opinion.))
It's nice to know that ZADR fans don't think it is the only right way.
Your gallery is very nice!
Princesses in pink are gorgeous!

It doesn't really bother me too much, though I admit seeing Dib with hair on the back and sides of his head is a bit of a pet peeve of mine (it's partially shaved people!). I tend to be rather open-minded about stuff like that, even if I don't personally care for it.
I tend to avoid OCs, mainly because it's hard to find good ones, not because I hate all of them.
I'm not big on pairings, at least not serious and mutual ones, though one-sided humorous ones I tend to enjoy (like Keef pursuing *cough*stalking*cough* poor, uninterested Zim). But I don't hate the pairings either. The only thing that bothers me about any of them is I am very anti-incest and anti-pedophilia. Slash doesn't bother me at all, as I am bi myself and feel insulted when people dislike a pairing simply because the people are of the same gender. Relationships between people who hate each other doesn't bother me either, as I hated my first boyfriend, but that didn't stop me from loving him. Love and hate are not exclusive, they are not opposites. You can hate and love a person at the same time, I know from experience.
I draw both in the original style and in my own personal style, as in doing so I put a piece of myself in the art. But unlike a lot of people, I try to keep their hair mostly the same, and I still draw them as kids/small people.

Hmm, well, ye had me up to the point where you said peeps who draw porn fanart were immoral *shrug* I personally think drowning babies is far more immoral than some silly fanart, but each to their own XD
Though unique fanart is a very cool thing ^^ Too bad that people honestly can't be unique all the time. But you could think of it like this: Wading through everything that seems the same helps make those works that are truly different just that much more special.
I dunno were I fit in with that belief, though XD I don't draw anime, but I don't draw in Jhonen's style. I have OCs, female ones to boot, but they don't interact with the main characters. (Well, they RARELY do, and even then it's only inside my own mind at random intervals of brainstorming XD). I pair peeps because I find the challenge of finding a reason endlessly entertaining, but I don't take it seriously at all, unlike a lot of slashers (the poor immature dears *pets them*). Though I really like Tak/Zee, mostly because Zee has no character development at all, so the possibilities are endless with her XD *cough* Point: I like pairing the characters simply because there IS no canon romance, so it's kind of a creative free for all, without having to think about 'NO, SO AND SO IS IN LOVE WITH THIS PERSON, AAAGH!' Just good fun, really, though non-romance is always just as cool ^^
Though I rarely see non-romance without it hating on the romance side of things, if that makes sense O.o Like, okay, I rarely see something that's not romance without the maker specifically stating that it's anti-romance in some way. And anymore, I see more anti-romance stuff than I see the lesser known pairings that I like, which makes me teh sad in a way that you're sad you find so much OOC/anime stuff
Lol, though I love what Sekele said about fan-porn XD And I personally will be flattered the day I find my own copyrighted and published (hopeful) in bad porn, or even good porn, because that'll mean SOMEONE likes my stuff well enough to warp it 8D But then, I dun have the ego of JV or Mr. Lucas XD

Wow! Thank you very much for such long comment! 👍: 0 ⏩: 1 You have very interesting point of view!
It's interesting that in IZ there wasn't much romance at all - and I liked it, because it made this show different. That must be why fans draw so many pics about love. But IZ wasn't about love. Or at least it wasnt' the main theme there.

Kr1mz0n In reply to Lilostitchfan [2007-08-19 11:17:32 +0000 UTC]
Exactly, which is why people find it fun to create something out of nothing 8D It's a challenge, you know? To recreate something you enjoyed with something different, than the same old "Gir goes crazy and Zim tries failingly to destroy the world and Dib needs to stop him' etc. I dunno, I find art having to do with really insane little pairings are fun, simply because I enjoy seeing the logic behind em. There's a lot of different things one can do to get two peeps together, even being in character, as long as you take into account fan-universes are out and about. Different ideas, different worlds, different just about everything <3

And I like the idea of trying tohand down a tradition and develop the original style of the show at the same time - new and funny ideas for classic situations. not just something that never took place in the show.
