I've been reading an embarrassing amount of Labyrinth fanfiction lately, and it's depressing how many authors make Jareth out to be this horrible, violent, cruel, generally unfeeling wretch who takes out his jilted aggression on poor grown-up Sarah.The appeal of Jareth is the appeal of all good villains; yes, he's a bastard. He's manipulative and arrogant and abusive of his power, but he's also very clever, romantic, softspoken, and goodness, he does try.
My point is that I get tickled all to heck when I find an author who gives me exactly what I crave, and one of them is Kytten , whose short n' sweet one-shots are the antidote for every angst pie I've accidentally swallowed.
This is fan art for one of her stories, in which Sarah, after three years without a word from Jareth, says fuck it, packs a few things and goes back to the Underground. Jareth discovers her hanging out in the garden, waiting for him. The cookie was my idea. It is a raspberry jam cookie.
I have various issues with this, but the funniest are these: because Jareth's gloves are black, it kind of looks like he has no hands. And I meant for Jareth to be looking at Sarah, but since the cookie is directly between him and Sarah, he appears to be confused and beguiled by the jam cookie, and not the girl he's been pining for. I'm wondering how many more times I can put Jareth and cookie in the same sentence.

First off - let me just say that I love your work. I've stumbled across it while browsing through Labyrinth related stuff several times.Β Secondly, I understand that I'm a few years late in commenting on this.. but cut me SOME slack - I rewatched the movie for the first time since I was 4 years old.. and that was in FEBRUARY, haha (my obsession with Jareth/Sarah/Labyrinth in general is still relatively recent). AAAANYWAY, onto my main point..
I completely feel you on this one. I've read a lot of fanfiction since watching the film again as an adult, and I see so much blatant abuse directed at Sarah. Jareth as a the Rape King tends to stand out the most. As you've already said, he was most certainly a bastard. A rapist/murderer/completely evil spawn of Satan, though? I think that misses the point entirely, and it cheapens the original story. It also diminishes from Sarah's character development. Ugh, I could go on, but I'll respectfully stop here.
Like I said before, I love your work, and I love the idea behind this piece! Hope you don't mind the random fav C:

You're right! I've glossed over some fanfics where, to my disgust, Jareth is written in a way like the author hasn't even watched the film and is doing their own made up whatever. And don't get me started on what some of these do to poor Sarah!Β Some are just so lame and poor written it's actually painful.
On the other hand, I found at least two people here on DA who wrote multiple Labyrinth fanfics and they REALLY nailed it! demonsaya.deviantart.com/Β and polgara87.deviantart.com/Β These two have really inspired my Labyrinth WIP fanfic.

Yes. Completely, utterly, yes! I just cannot reconcile some of these fanfic!Jareths with the one I'd expect 10 or 15 years later. So this is lovely and fun and thank you for the fic recs which I desperately need. (Got any more?)

Aw so cute! I've always loved these two, ever since I was a little girl, which is why I was so shocked to read as you pointed out all those fanfics where he is completely horrible and an evil Bastard. I never thought of him as being evil, even as a child. I liked him and felt that if anything, he was teaching Sarah a lesson - at least that was how my Dad explained it to me - and deep down, while he is a manpulative, arrogant and power-greedy King, he's really quite lonely and I do think he did care for Sarah. In my mind, when she's an adult she goes back to him and they live happily ever after.

A couple of years ago, this picture inspired a great need in me: the need for a big floppy sun hat. The journey has been long and there were many pretenders, but I finally have it AND I got it for a pretty sweet bargain.

I wonder if you might draw another scene from one of Kytten's fics that I recently read and adored, though I don't beleive it is finished yet. It's called "under pressure" I beleive, and features Sarah in a ridiculously garish watermelon dress and drag-queen tiara, telling Jareth to "Bring it on." It's a scene I'd love to see, if you'd perhaps consider it. If you haven't read the fic yet I highly reccommend it.

One of the best fanfictions on Jareth and Sarah is on fanfiction net it is called "Social Obligations" It is multi chapter and thoroughly enjoyable I highly reccomend you read it. I love your oh so casual picture it is delightful!

He is not evil, he is her dark side, as she is selfish and immature, he is her charming prince who dance with her in a fairytale palace and take the annoying baby away. He did just what she asked for. And at the end she learned the lesson and everything is fine. And he is David Bowie! He can not be wrong.

I dunno, I kind of like the idea of Jareth being confused and beguiled by a jam cookie. How do we know he's ever even seen one? And cookies are fascinating stuff.
Piiiicture wise, this is lovely. I'm really impressed/intrigued by how you used markers and yet managed to have a minimum of marker traces. Was that the PS, or are you just damn talented at blending the things?

Truly, that was just quick marker work, which ain't something I'm usually good at. Marker overlap lines bedevil me to this day. You want to see some seriously spectacular marker work, check out 's work. She's phenomenal!

This one is -- I think -- on 11" x 8" bristol. Just recently I painted something for my husband on a big canvas, and that was the first time I've ever worked on anything larger than 11 x 8, unless you count my bedroom walls when I was like fifteen.

As for the gloves, I can kinda see what you mean, but they're canonical and if you made them white or some other color someone would have whined about it. But they aren't the focus of the pic, so I don't think it's a big deal.

Utterly lovely. I love the expression Sarah has as she is holding the cookie out, the hat making it plain that she can't see him, but knows he is there; Jereth not exactly knowing what to think other then there is a Jam cookie and, more importantly, a lovely, gorgeous Sarah at the other end. X3 I do so like this sort of take on their relationship. Really, he's the Goblin King, he can't be all hate and bitterness when he is surrounded by so many strange subjects. Very very nice~
