Description

Name: Brian Gaunt

Age: 46 (Looks 28)

Height: 5’10

Occupation: Orderly/Tracker

Personality:

Introvert: A trait that he got after fusing with his daegra, Brian is rather distant from people. He’ll avoid large gatherings of people and lunches with co-workers until he’s ready. Emotionally and physically he’ll be on the fringes of the group. His personal bubble is quite large when it comes to people he views as strangers or mere acquaintances. This makes him come off as “aloof” or “holier-than-thou” at times.

Disrespectful/Bold: Despite his mostly quiet nature, Brian will occasionally make bold verbal quips. When he speaks, he’s quite confident and isn’t afraid to say what’s on his mind. This has made him enemies of quite a few bosses in the past, which is one of the reasons why before Godsglaow he was unemployed.

Alert/Observant: Brian pays close attention to details. He’s very aware of the environment around him. Not on purpose- it’s just something that he does.

Fun-loving: When comfortable, Brian enjoys jokes, pranks, and banter. Good-natured teasing is something that Brian would be delighted to participate in.

Appreciative: After the roller-coaster of a life he’s had, he’s learned to be more appreciative (and also protective) of what he has. He still has expensive tastes, but he doesn’t complain when he can’t get something.

Educated: Being born into aristocracy, he had a very good education, though he ended up not using his education for anything useful. In the past, he flaunted his education to charm people into his bed. Nowadays, when you can get him talking, he’ll use his intelligence to make for some interesting and articulate conversations.

Power: Mental Manipulation

Ability 1: Mind reading- He can read minds (this includes current thoughts and memories). Usually, thoughts are more impressions, images. The images won’t be like a clear movie, rather, more like an out of focus image. The more someone focuses on what they’re thinking of, the clearer it is. Memories tend to be faulty and inaccurate. It’s only what the person remembers/how they remember it, which might not necessarily be “true”. The experience of mind reading to Brian is like hearing a murmur of conversations- or stepping into an art gallery. He can hear words and see images, but if he isn’t focusing on one, he doesn’t get all the details.

Tier 1: He can read the minds of one person as long as he’s touching them.

Tier 2: He can read the minds of a maximum of 10 people from as far as ten feet away.

Tier 3: He can read the minds of a maximum of 15 people from as far as 20 feet away.

Ability 2: Psychic Communication- He can telepathically communicate with other people. When he communicates with multiple people at once, it’s like a conference call and everybody can “hear” what everyone’s saying. In order to start a conversation, Brian has to be within 20 feet. (The distance from which he can read/feel their mind.)

Tier 1: He can communicate with a maximum of 2 other people. After 20 minutes or after he’s half a mile away, he’ll start to get a headache from the strain.

Tier 2: He can communicate with a maximum of 4 other people. After 45 minutes or after he’s one and a half miles away, he’ll start to get a headache from the strain.

Tier 3: He can communicate with a maximum of 7 other people. After an hour or after he’s two and a half miles away, he’ll start to get a headache from the strain.

Ability 3: Persuasion- The ability to make someone do what he wants them to do and persuade their mind that it was their idea all along. For example, if someone wants to attack him, he can mentally change their mind and insert thoughts about why it would be a bad idea to further persuade them to not. If a person is particularly stubborn, it might not work in time. It works best on people who actually like Brian or people who are weak willed.

Tier 1: If he’s further than five feet away from the person, the power is weak or won’t work at all.

Tier 2: If he’s further than 8 feet away from the person, the power is weak or won’t work at all.

Tier 3: If he’s further than 12 feet away from the person, the power is weak or won’t work at all.

Ability 4: Amnesia- The ability to make someone forget something that happened. It works best if it just happened. If it was something that happened a few hours ago, they might have a feeling they forgot something, like a, “I wanted to tell you something, but I can’t remember it at all!” sort of feeling. If it just happened, the person won’t notice a thing.

Tier 1: If he’s not touching them, he can make a person forget something that happened within 2 hours. With touch, the amount increases to within 4 hours.

Tier 2: Without touch, he can make a person forget something that happened within 3 hours. With touch, the amount increases to within 6 hours.

Tier 3: Without touch, he can make a person forget something that happened within 4 hours. With touch, the amount increases to within 8 hours.

History:

(TW: Self Harm mentions)

Brian came from a long line of Lapidaries, which were artisans who work with cutting, engraving, and polishing stones and gems. Their business was an extremely successful one and his family was extremely well-to-do. (The family could travel around the world and still have money to splurge.) Brian was the youngest of three sons and was a rather spoiled and entitled brat who thought that the world revolved around him. While his older brothers worked hard to improve their skill doing lapidary work and pleasing their parents, Brian became known as the “Wayward son of the Lapidary Gaunt family.”

The boy would come home drunk at least three times a week, openly slept with half the girls and secretly bedded half the men in the city, and had been arrested and held in a cell in Scotland Yard too many times to count. His crimes would be things like public indecency, desecration of private property, brawling in the streets, and disrespecting law enforcement. All in all, Brian was a difficult child and the only reason he hadn’t been outright disowned was because of his mother. At 26, he still hadn’t matured, using his looks and his money to get his way wherever he went.

One night, a daegra was passing through, searching for a body that might suit them well. The daegra found Brian while he was sleeping, curled up naked next to an equally naked body. Brian looked soft, gentle, and loving while embracing the body next to him, and the daegra, attracted by this, decided that Brian was the one for him.

After that night, Brian became increasingly and disturbingly violent. Much more violent than he was previously. It was too easy for him to snap and get into a fight. Even his friends were alarmed. They couldn’t joke around without Brian nearly punching their brains out.

Because the violence was becoming too out of control, Brian’s Aunt, who was a doctor, came by to attempt to diagnose him. When he started complaining of images and voices, his Aunt could only conclude that Brian had become insane. Brian’s parents didn’t want to admit their youngest son to an asylum for fear of the press, so they imprisoned him in their house.

A few months later, Brian’s Aunt opened the door to Brian’s room and found a seal on the bed instead of her nephew. Everyone was absolutely bewildered. No one had any explanation for how the sea animal got into the room- or how Brian seemingly escaped from his. Brian’s room was locked and the windows were barred, after all.

They couldn’t keep the seal, however. Thankfully, there was a circus in town, and they decided to “donate” the seal to them.

By the time Brian had shifted back to himself, his family was long gone. Unfortunately, when he did shift back, it was in front of circus-goers and circus staff- including the Ringmaster. Believing that they had just struck gold and found themselves a real-life selkie, they quickly threw Brian into a cage and put him on display for everyone to gawk at.

The circus got popular overnight because of their newest addition. Despite being the star of the show, however, Brian was not treated very well. Especially since it took him a while to figure out how exactly to turn back into a seal again. The circus undoubtedly thought of him as an animal- a being with lower intelligence than them- so he was treated as such. When he mouthed off at them or didn’t do anything they wanted him to do, he was beaten. He was fed raw fish, which, to be fair, is probably what a real selkie would eat anyways. He was constantly harassed by the attendees; especially children who found rocks and sticks to throw at him. People yelled at him to “do something”. There was no privacy at all. Aside from a sheet, the circus staff didn’t give him clothes to cover himself.

Brian was absolutely humiliated.

There were two things that kept him distracted and sane. He had long ago discovered that the voices and images that he could hear and see were actually thoughts. Brian was still unsure how he was suddenly able to read minds, but he knew it had to do with the fact that he could sometimes turn into a seal. To keep himself entertained, he would reach with his mind to other people and practice using his powers.

The second thing that kept him from wanting to kill himself, was a man named Jasper. Jasper was a sword swallower who took an interest in Brian. He wasn’t a very friendly guy to most people. Put bluntly, Jasper was an asshole, but he was nice enough to Brian. For example, Jasper would sneak Brian good food and in the dead of night, when everyone was asleep, Jasper would break him out of the cage for a few hours.

When they got closer, Brian and Jasper would tease at the idea of “eloping” together and leaving the circus in the dead of night. They developed a theoretical plan of how they would do it. There were certain days that were particularly bad that made Jasper act on the plan- he’d bought a few sets of clothes for Brian and hid them deep in his trunk. Underneath the clothes, Jasper hid money that would support them for a few weeks after their escape. Despite the fact that they were technically ready, however, Jasper and Brian never actually attempted to leave.

That is until August came around.

It was very alarming when Jasper started to have mood swings. The moments when Jasper would have ignored hateful words like water running down his back, he fell into a deep depression instead. Brian was surprised at the amount of concern he felt for the other man. He resolved to behave himself. Like he expected, the Ringleader awarded his good behavior by allowing him out of the cage during the day. Brian was able to keep a better eye on Jasper this way.

His worries turned out to not be unfounded when he found Jasper bleeding out from self inflicted wounds. Thankfully, he found Jasper just in time and was able to save him. When the man woke up, Brian made sure to give him a piece of his mind in English and in French. He ranted about how he couldn’t believe Jasper would kill himself and leave him, Brian, in the circus. Alone.

It was then that Jasper and Brian decided that they were going to leave that night while everyone was asleep. It was surprisingly and suspiciously easy to get out of the circus.

Paranoid that someone would recognize him and force him back into a circus- or a laboratory of scientists, Brian convinced Jasper that they should leave the country and go to France for a while. They never stayed in one place for long. They didn’t keep jobs for long, either. Most of the time it was Brian’s fault that they’d lose it, but sometimes it was because Jasper couldn’t handle it. For a while, they struggled with their ridiculously unstable income and were forced to live in some pretty shabby places.

Half a year later, Jasper’s moods finally, and mysteriously, stabilized. As a result, he was able to keep jobs for longer. Brian was bewildered to wake up to Jasper being cheerful, but he decided not to look the gift horse in the mouth. After Brian was fired from his seventh job, the two men decided that it was probably best if Jasper be the breadwinner.

A little after Jasper stabilized, they discovered that spirits were possessing them. Brian wasn’t particularly impressed. Jasper’s spirit, in his opinion, was annoying, and he was being possessed by a seal of all things. They weren’t exactly scary. Brian and Jasper learned that the spirits called themselves daegra and yes, they were responsible for the fact that they had powers.

Years went by. They noticed they weren’t aging, of course. Once a Crimson Moon came around, they asked their daegra about it and were shocked to find that they were basically immortal now. It gave them a new reason to move around frequently.

Then, one day, a letter found its way into their mailbox. It invited them to work at a place called Godsglaow Asylum. There were room and board available, should they need it, and the pay was quite good. What caught Brian’s attention, however, was the fact that the letter said that the patients the Asylum tended to, and the staff, were all “like them”. It hadn’t even crossed his mind that there might be other people who were possessed by daegra, even though his daegra had informed him that there were many other daegra out there. Interested, Brian convinced Jasper that they should accept the job. If the people at the asylum were really like them, then they wouldn’t have to worry about moving around so much, after all.

Other:

Birthday: August 20

-Henry is the name of the person who Brian was sleeping with when the daegra came across Brian. Although Brian’s moved on, Henry remains a special person in Brian’s heart. Although he can’t bring himself to see the man in person, he does send Henry a small bouquet of hyacinths and some money once a year. Henry belongs to Aiaix.

-Brian can play the piano. He also knows fencing.

-Jasper belongs to mo0gs.

-Brian applied for Orderly because it seemed easiest. Even though he’s less phobic to messes than he was before the circus, dealing with cleaning vomit wasn’t what he wanted to do for a living. He knew nothing about the medical field, being a therapist was definitely a no, he never gardened in his life, Brian being in the kitchen was a recipe for disaster, and laundry and folding sheets were things he still struggled with. So, Orderly it was.

-Brian boldly asked for one room for he and Jasper to stay in. As well as one bed.

-Brian doesn’t particularly care that people died or got hurt by the Hunters in the Asylum recently. What he does care about is the fact that he and Jasper are living in the Asylum now, so if there’s people out to kill people in the Asylum, then they’re in danger. He cares about the fact that Hunters are out there looking for people like them to kill off- so nowhere is safe for them (he and Jasper). So, he decided to try being a Tracker. “If you want something done, you do it yourself”.
