You're free to make whatever meaning you wish for this! but here's a little backstory I came up with for it about half way through...
In the mushroom forest there is rumoured to be a mushroom that can grant you immortality. If you guess wrong, you become part of the forest.
She's a priestess of some sort, and the temple she is from trains girls who have potential for 'psychic powers'. They ritualistically send the best of the girls to the forest to find the mushroom when they complete their training.
