Description
Snowflakes flittered gracefully in icy white flurries for as far as the eye could see. It blanketed the grounds and muffled the sounds of the hundreds of students gathering before the school gates. Severus carefully occupied himself by buttoning his black trench coat. Glancing around at the small groups of huddled figures, he brought his chilled hands to his lips and attempted to blow life into his frozen fingers. He normally never joined the groups of students that ventured into Hogsmeade, preferring to take the opportunity to spread his notes all across the boys dormitory without fear of them being trampled. He very rarely had money of his own to spend on any of the frivolities that the others would laden their pockets with, nor did he particularly have anybody to go there with. At least not until today.

Severus had only one class with Lily. It was really the only chance he had to speak with her these days as all of their free time was spent locked away in the common rooms studying for their O.W.L.s. And even in the class they were only allowed five minutes before Professor McGonagall would cast her steely gaze across the room, making the students flee back to their seats. In their last Transfiguration class after their conversation being cut short once again, Lily had scribbled a note to him asking him to meet with her on the next village trip.

Severus scanned the pink-cheeked and runny-nosed faces around him. Finally, he spotted her and his breath caught in his chest. She was wearing a pink snow cap and her long, red hair fell in wavy tresses halfway down her back. Even from a distance her bright green sweater set off her eyes, making them seem to glow in the gray air. She was surrounded by a group of girls, all talking and giggling, waving their hands in emphasis.

Severus had a dropping feeling.

She was going into Hogsmeade with her girlfriends. Perhaps she had not sent him that note at all. Perhaps it was just another prank to get him to make a fool of himself. Or maybe she did write the note, but forgot all about it. Severus snorted and with bitterness rising in his throat began making his way back to the school.

“Sev! There you are!” a heavenly voice called out to him. Severus stopped and turned. Lily was jogging towards him, her smiling face flushed with cold. “For a minute I thought I’d never find you!” She said once she’d caught up with him. The smile dropped from her face when she saw what direction he had been headed.

“Aren’t you going to the village?” She asked. Snape coughed.

“Erm…of course! I just thought I’d forgotten something, but I didn’t.” He said, cursing himself for such a lame excuse. Lily’s face brightened and she motioned for him to follow her back towards the gate. They spoke of school life on the way into the village, about classes and about lessons and about the stresses of the O.W.L. exams.

“Don’t worry so much about them, Sev. You are absolutely brilliant! I’m sure you’ll have no problems with them.” Lily glowed, placing her hand on his shoulder. Severus thought he could feel her warmth through her pink mittens and his heavy clothes. But all too soon she removed her hand pointed in awe at a large gold eagle owl that was gliding into the post office.

From behind the two came the sound of roaring laughter and the rapid crunching of people running in the snow. Both of them turned just in time for a boy with wavy black hair to collide into Lily. Sirius had been running backwards, he spun on his heels, grabbed Lily by the shoulders and righted her before she hit the snow in one graceful motion.

“Sorry Evans!” He called over his shoulder as he kept running.

“SIRIUS! YOU TWIT!” She yelled after him, smiling nonetheless. Remus shot by a second later waving and calling out a quick greeting before he disappeared around the corner after Sirius. And then Potter came. James was about to just give her a quick nod mid-flight until he spotted Severus. Snow puffed up around his boots as he came to an abrupt stop.

“What’s this then?” He asked looking from Lily to Severus. “If that’s the type you go for, Evans, you should have let me know. All this time I spent trying to look attractive and all I needed to do was let the bludger have a go at me!”

“Sod off Potter!” Lily growled, scooping up a handful of snow and lobbing it at him. James laughed her off and continued running after his friends. A few seconds later, Pettigrew came wheezing up the road after the boys. He glanced at both of them with watering eyes as he passed but offered no greeting as he chugged diligently by.

“Just don’t pay attention to him. He’s only saying things like that to get a rise out of you.” Lily said, glaring up the road. Severus glared moodily at the churned up snow. They walked for a short ways in silence. Rosmerta was stringing Christmas decorations around the outside of her pub, he clear voice singing carols across the square as she waved her wand in time with the beat.

“Oh! That reminds me!” Lily said, stopping in the snow. “What are your plans for Christmas?” She asked. Severus shrugged.

“I supposed I’m just going to stay at the castle.” He said, jerking his head over his shoulder in Hogwarts’ general direction.

“Well, that won’t do!” Lily said. “You’ll be all alone! Why don’t you come stay with my family for the Holidays?”

“What?” Snape asked, his eyes widening.

“I’m sure my parents will be thrilled to have you! And you could even go visit your mum if you’d like!” Severus’ eyes narrowed, “Or not.” Severus snorted.

“I’m sure your sister would be thrilled to see me again.” He said.

“Oh, Tuney can just deal with it.” Lily said, rolling her eyes. Severus sighed and turned his face to the sky. It was just too good to be true. He wanted to go with her more than anything. But he knew that if he got his hopes up they would only be dashed. Some force, nature or otherwise, was bound to interfere. He just didn’t want to deal with that much disappointment. He smiled sadly at Lily and shook his head.

“Thank you for the offer. But I have a few plans here at the castle for the holidays.” He lied. He had no plans except to study. Lily frowned.

“Are you sure?” She asked, looking skeptical.

“Yes, I’m sure.” Severus said, smiling as assuredly as he could manage with his face half frozen.

“Very well, if you’re sure.” Lily shrugged. She pulled out her wand and gave it a graceful flick. She didn’t even use an incantation. She tucked her wand away into her sweater pocket and waited. A matter of seconds later, a small red box topped with a green ribbon soared through the sky and came to rest in her hand. She handed this to Severus.

“Happy Christmas! I wanted to give this to you in person, and now I don’t know when we’ll have the chance again. So there you are.” She said cheerfully. Severus didn’t know why he was so surprised, nor so touched. She gave him a present EVERY year, after all. He smiled and took the box from her.

“Thank you. I don’t have yours yet, but I’ll send it to your house.” He said, tucking the present into his pocket.

“Alright. Now come along. I’ll treat you to a butterbeer!” Lily said, grabbing his arm and pulling him towards the pub.
