I kinda wanted to see an adaptation of "same as it never was" in the 2012 show, hell, that killed off splinter twiceΒ

So glad this was an alternate time dimension for the Turtles (SAINW) and that they all (including Donnie) wound up back together - young, unhurt, and a family once again.Β This picture is so grueling and terrible depicting their state after a grevious battle.Β I don't remember Mikey having Donnie's mask, only that to Raph, Leo and Mikey, Donnie just disappeared without explanation or any trace to track him down.Β Then, 30 years later, he shows up and they battle The Shredder one last time - which costs the lives of Mikey, Raph and Leo.Β Like I said, SO GLAD this was an alternate time dimension thingy and not the actualΒ final conclusion at the end of the movie Turtles Forever.Β Had it been, whoever produced the movie would have had a mob on his hands!

Then why is Mikey crying over Donnie's mask?

This is from the 2k3-series, an episode called 'Same as it never was' (SAINW) in which Donnie is send to a possible and very dark future. The Donatello of this future timeline has some day vanished without trace, leaving the others behind, not knowing if he left them, got captured or died (I think it is never revealed what exactly has happened to him...). Without him the remaining brothers started to grow apart. They couldn't stop the Shredder from taking over and lost Splinter in the fight (he gave his live to save his remaining sons).Β
So... this scene may take place shortly after this fight and Splinters death and maybe Mikey is just thinking this all would never have happened if Donnie did not have disappeared (hence he is real cold when Donnie from the past appeared and first of all took him to Splinters grave without warning... which seemed really cruel but may be explained by the harsh reality he has the live in every day...).
So in this future Mikey has lost an arm, Raph has lost an eye and Leo is blind... Splinter is dead and Donnie still missing. Very depressive but it seems like everyone who watched the 2k3-series remembers this episode.
I don't know if this happened in the comics, though...Β

I think it's because everything for them just went wrong, like splinter died and Donnie disappeared, and if you look at them it looks like all there injuries are kinda fresh, like when Donnie was sent to this universe Leo had dark spectacles and mikey had a mask that covered his head (plus in the episode it stated that Donnie had vanished)

This is heart breakingly beautiful. I think Mikey clutching at and crying over Donnie's mask is what really seals it for me. Stupendous job!
