Description
* Warning: Big File *Well many of you have asked so I decided to whip this up as I progressed through my last painting. I figure some of you would appreciate it.
This isn't so much a tutorial but a step-by-step to how I arrive at a finished creature, so sorry if I leave a lot of important tips out. If you have any additional comments or questions don't be afraid to ask.
I hope you all enjoy.

It is defiantly a good start, no doubt about that, It just takes a lot of practice. To put things in perspective I usually work on art for at least 5 - 10 hours a day, ranging from studies, sketches, or full blown works. The results of your hard work will eventually show, just keep at it.

Considering that I work on art about 15 hours a WEEK, there's a small difference. XD Keeping at it anyways!

I would love to ask a quick question:
some artists prefer to use grayscale and then color, others go straight into the color. What is your opinion?
(and nice process btw)

Both are just techniques that artists use to basically arrive at the same result, personally I suck with color all around but I prefer it when artists go straight into color. When artists color gray scale it's often muddied down and the vibrancy you get from using just color, is lost. Now there are those who use gray scale, color it using overlay, and then render on top of that layer, which I also admire. Gosh, if only I was that good though.
Hope that helps, and thank you.

I love it! Do you have any brushes you could share with us? And what is your trick to blending the black and white to create such a smooth shading? Thanks!

I use a lot of random brushes that I have collected from various digital artists throughout the years, but most of them are used to texture. Here is one artist's brushes I use [link] which, you can download from here [link]
I typically just use the basic round brush in Photoshop and set it on low "flow", around 30%, and low "opacity", 70%, to blend. I also smudge with a custom brush to further blend parts that need it. As I progress through the painting and begin to detail I'll start using harder brushes to achieve sharp details you often see.
Hope that helps.

Same here, I tend to enjoy them more than the painting itself. So many useful details, facts, and tips you pick up in progress shots that you wouldn't see normally in a finished painting.
