I love the people who make stock.
I love that they are have a passion for sharing.
And I love that they are on dA.

BUT

What is up with the rules, people?
"Please leave a link to your work and credit me in the description (on dA) or near the the image (outside dA)" should suffice, right? RIGHT?

Apparently not.

It is very common that you are presented with a list of 10 points with restrictions like "No use outside dA" and "No commercial use" - these are common. I find them... weird. Why? If it was about being paid, then sure, but usually there's a comment underneath with "If I like it I may permit you to post other places and offer it as print" - so, what? You control the art that was made either using your stock in a photomanipulation or as reference in graphics or illustration? WHY? It hurts my head and my heart. It reeks of unnecessary control. Just make use of the new feature thingy dA offers and SELL your stock.

I do not get the other weird rules people have, like: no antro, no making me ugly, no making me pretty (editing away pimples, straightening toes, I'm paraphrasing but you get what I mean.)), no sexual themes and so on. There's people who don't want you to use their stock if you put a kitten in your piece along with their stock. Just saying.

ssst says (quote): "Word! To tell you how /annoying/ stock rules can be sometimes, I went and bought myself poser. I don't use stock at all anymore in fear of overstepping a boundary."
I've seen stock rules that go on and ooon, and I at least just sort of shrug, forget I ever saw that incredible stock and move on to someone with simpler rules. Or, as I have begun to, simply don't use an actual reference - or I google. Yeah, there, I said it. Granted it's mostly for traditional art I use google, and it is merely references, so I'm sitting there with 10 pictures of an angle of a face to get a grip on how a nose could look, or 10 pictures of crows to figure out how the feathers spread. I could just as well have used deviantart, and used stock. But it's too frikkin' complicated.

ssst says (quote):  "I go "DEVIL DEVIL *HISSSS*"  at stock /rules/"

Anyway, here's a feature to make up for all my harsh words:

(I wanted to find good stock with good rules ... but yeah.)

Ah! Another person who has similar thoughts on the uhh..rules. By all means bless the stock artists who do wonderful things, share their work for us to do, and some that are absolutely awesome both as person or regarding how their works are used. But..a little too much? And then there's the "if you don't like it, move on to some other stock , etc etc" comment. I think I have heard it in the "if you don't like dA, move to another site" bell

Go make an account in ModelMayhem and collaborate with models or photographers from there. Some are very nice to do TFPs. I even was allowed to do a photomanipulation/painting of an amazing photographer and the model.

Once upon a time /ic/ found this stock image (squatting girl with a knife and camo shirt) and the owner had rules like

only use for photomanipulation!!!
Apparently she didn't want it used as a drawing reference

And you know, there is no law preventing you from using anything whatsoever as a drawing reference, unlike actually reusing photo elements in a new piece it counts as fully original, at least for these amateur purposes

So /ic/ made a ton of drawings using this photo as a reference
and the owner got preeetty mad and deleted it (drama+) and stuff, but, everyone had saved it and could keep using it as ref, because we are perfectly in our right to do so.

And I know /ic/ is not your army and all that, but it was fun and I doubt the original photographer learned anything at all. She just got miffed.

I think they make these rules for very navel-gazing reasons, they want to browse dA and see themselves.

I don't know what /ic/ means?

Weird that someone wouldn't want a stock photo used as a drawing reference. I think most of the time stock-providers simply forget that there's a whole other world beyond photomanipulation.

I do think you're right about the whole navel-gazing thing. It's very apparent if you browse newest - wouldn't recommend it if you're afraid of close ups of genitalia though.

it's the artwork/critique board on 4chan

I'm not afraid of them, per se, they just make me lose faith in humanity. Maybe they would be hilarious to photo manipulate, however.

Yeah, some rules really make you not want to use an awesome stock image eventually.

And especially when it comes to references, not using an image "as is" for a manipulation for example, but using an image to get how hair flows or how eyebrows are attached to the face… most rules are way too unclear. Or they are so strict, that you won't do the hassle of using it only as reference.

I wish more stockers would modify their rules to more needs than only photo manipulation

All it really needs is wether you can use it personally or commercially.Stating not using it for hate, harassment or pornography (or anything not allowed on dA anyway f.e.). Giving credit isn't even necessary to add on dA, cos ALL deviations require giving credit by the dA rules anyway.

However deciding AFTER the image has been used whether to allow prints or submission elsewhere is really a dick move

Hey I use Poser like =ssst and even then I use stock and Google

LineBirgitte In reply to Kjherstin [2012-08-29 20:18:42 +0000 UTC]

yeah, poser is awesome, but if you want real life references, like how wrinkles curl around an eye you need stock or google

I think this makes a lot of sense; the only time I see any sort of restriction for how it should be used to make art (IE: sexual themes prohibited and similar conditions) is with pictures with younger people/children. :/
But I also respect that it is THEIR choice, as they own the image. If they want to add the restrictions, then they can; but most people will skim past it to try to find one with less rules, so it'll just hurt how useable it is.

I've seen restrictions relating to sexual themes on lots of stock that wasn't with children. But you're right, it is their choice

Silly prudes.
But if anything, it just makes the artist making the restrictions suffer no one using it.

It's probably more understandable if the stock was submitted before the Premium Content thing went live, and they just didn't bother updating every single stock image yet, or something

but I don't know

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LineBirgitte In reply to Pakaku [2012-08-29 19:35:29 +0000 UTC]

...or something. They could have just sold their stock outside dA then. If it was about the money - but it doesn't appear to be about the money. IT'S CONTROL I TELL YOU!

I don't know either

It's probably to do with taking the copyright mentality of normal images (do not steal!) and applying it to images that are normally meant to be taken anyways
