Description
What if Shantae were a retro RPG character?
Originally a pixel art sprite made on my 3DS, later refined, re-scaled and animated in Photoshop.

I was starting to doubt if there was enough pixel space to make shantae (mostly because of her ponytail) one square makes the difference in this small sprite arts

Since the grid is 16 squares in weight and height you can't exceed the limits. You need to fit all the shapes in that little box, you remove all the complicated details and leave only the necessary squares. Her ponytail makes her head a tiny bit taller, so I had to compress the rest the best I could XD
If you look closer, her top is made of only one square, I had one more square for her belly, and the rest is her pants. If I put two red squares together it looks like a single shape, so I needed her belly square.
The secret is to use the least amount of squares to define a shape, because you have more room to work. It's a good thing that her design is iconic, you wouldn't be able to do that with more complicated characters

You could try to make one yourself. Just find a math notebook and try to make a drawing just filling the little squares XD
I actually had a "sketchbook" like that, it gave me an idea if the drawing was going to fit the grid or not
