it's been a while since I play the game, but probably it was part of the character development.
As far as I remember in the second game he retired from doing it and people challenged him to take the assassin spot. Then again it's been a while since I played it.

both were amazing works of art. No more heroes one and 2 were both very fun to play and Slayers was an amazing anime. Very long though but good.

That would have been a great idea. A lot of the game did feel like I was playing through an anime, from the script to the whole reason why Travis became an assassin.
