I decided to revamp the designs for my vulpix variations I made a year and a half ago. I’ve mainly fleshed them out to be used in a story among some of my ask blogs. More or less, Reds are based off of Kyubey and Arctics based off of Inari’s foxes. For the colors I’ve drawn inspiration from the RBY sprite colors for the Red variant and I started to draw inspiration from the gods in Okami for the Arctic variant. I was given suggestions that the colors clashed a bit too much so I’ve dulled the reds so they weren’t so intense.
Modern
Ninetales live up to 1000 years of age
They focus on a mix of special and status attacks
Can understand human speech
Vengeful if wronged
Evolves right after exposure to fire stones
Found in many areas; mountains, abandoned buildings, near cities, ect.
Domesticated and distributed globally in favor for a more easily tamable pokemon for captivity
Curses/wishes are double edged swords and can go in any direction, one payment from the ninetales, the other payment from nature.
Either live solitary or in packs/tribes
Illusionists with little age
Very smart
Red
Ninetales live up to 1200 years of age
They focus on a mix of physical and status attacks
Can understand human speech
Destructive and Deceitful if not prepared mentally for evolution, something other ninetales would usually help them do
Evolves gradually over a two week period after exposure to fire stones
Found at the base of mountains
Critically Endangered, driven to near extinction from the introduction of today’s Modern species and culled from captivity due to destructive and hard to tame nature.
Curses and wishes backfire to entertain or benefit the ninetales and are very chaotic in nature. They tend to gravitate towards inner-most fears and phobias
They live in solitary with some coalitions of brothers or a mother and her kits
Illusionists as they become older
Very cunning
Arctic
Ninetales live up to 800 years of age
They focus on a mix of Defensive and Status attacks
Cannot understand human speech. They use colorful dancing flames to communicate.
Skittish and reserved. They tend to avoid conflict
Evolve right after exposure to fire stones though its very rare since the stones are scarce in the tundra
Found in the Tundra and snowy areas
Endangered; generally secluded from human interaction but population has dwindled due to habitat loss
Grant wishes that negatively afflicts themselves and take something of equal importance away from the wisher
They live in large tribes consisting of mostly vulpix with two or three ninetales as their leaders
Illusionists as older vulpix or young ninetales. Often use their illusions to camouflage
