Description
A British colonial police sergeant, during the retreat from empire in the 1950s-60s. Police service uniform was fairly standard in the various colonies, with only the insignia changing, So conceivably he could be serving almost anywhere. He's armed with a Sterling SMG, introduced in 1953 suggesting involvement in counter-terrorist operations. The sergeant is having a crafty smoke, so he's out of view of any officers at present.I don't hold any nostalgia for empire, as with most of my uniform illustrations I'm more interested in the practical design of military clothing and equipment and how insignia and clothing items are used to convey authority and national or political identity.
'One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter'.
