Description

Operation Postmaster 14 January 1942. The port of Santa Isabel, on the Spanish colonial island of Fernando Po off the West African coast.

A combined force of the British Small Scale Raiding Force (SSRF) and the Special Operations Executive (SOE) launch a daring raid to seize three Axis flagged merchant ships  operating out of a 'neutral', port and believed to be supporting U-boat activity on the West African coast.

A tale of daring do and dashing commandos with all the hallmarks of a 007 novel. Perhaps not surprising as the operation was in part the brainchild of Ian Fleming, then working for British Naval Intelligence.

There's a pretty good book on the operation and its participants by Brian Lett, 'Ian Fleming and SOE's Operation Postmaster'. The links between the operation and Fleming's later fiction are stretched a little thin at times but it's still a good read with clearly a lot of research behind it.
