Ember://
The dull roar of outraged nobility was not stifled by Ember’s command. They did not quiet when she stepped down from the throne’s platform (never taking the seat, no, but standing just in front,) and they were not silenced by her approach. But when she locked her eyes upon Bale, when she opened her mouth and breathed sapphire flames that engulfed the newly arisen kirin from snout to foot, when her fire reached for the vaulted ceiling and stained the floor black, when Bale did not scream - then, they were silent.

Ember halted before the burning effigy, and waited. The fire popped, hissed, and at length it died; what remained was a kirin, untouched by the heat, not a single strand of hair scorched.

The quiet endured, so deep that a clinking pin might have given the room a start. Lilith, eyes closed long before Ember had begun to breathe her flames, did not open them.

“Kirins do not burn.” Ember announced, voice even, no higher than normal pitch. As before, it carried through the room with immeasurable presence. “Nor do they wear chains. Revisit your fighting bets, my Eminences. This man is free.”

She returned her gaze to Bale, nodded, and served the same gesture to Milan. The nobles began to speak again - softer, more wondrous, though there were some who remained furious over this cosmic slight. Ember ignored them, calling for the next meeting as a steward pulled the lovers aside to escort them out, all the while discussing the documents and paperwork that would be delivered in the coming days.

Milan

Milan had heard of what had happened when the little Ingrid was presented, yet he was not entirely prepared for the stream of flame unleashed by Ember. He knew Bale to be a genuine kirin, of course, and he knew they did not burn, but still he winced and started forward, only to stop and stand still in wonder. The flames licked Bale’s form, hot and hungry, but unable to get hold. Soon, they whittled away, leaving only the unharmed, shining kirin.
His eyes found Ember’s for the shortest moment. A flash of gratitude mixed with something akin to fear.
Nobility were not to be trifled with.

But so the decision was made, and Bale was free. The papers would follow, but the promise seemed solid. The steward guided them out, and soon they were back outside on the streets. Bale’s skin still radiated warmth from the flames.
“That was… Intense”, he said after a long silence.
