When the flood ceases

And the ground of Great Meadows

Shows up again,

They will rise from that ground,

Shadows of past,

That have slept for years

Under the calm waves

Of the man-made sea.

They will rise

And come for you,

Murderers of my nation,

Torturers of my land.

Great Medow (Veliky Lug in Ukrainian) is the historical name of the area, giant river flats that once existed on the left bank of the Dnipro. It was Cossaks' land. This entire area belonged to the Zaporizhzhya Sich, and Velikiy Lug was often equated to all of Zaporozhye. Most of Velikiy Lug was flooded by the waters of the Kakhovsky Reservoir in 1955–1957. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian people, who lived on that territory, had lost their homes. Now, Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovska Dam, and tens of thousands of Ukrainians lost their homes, many people are dying, countless animals are dying…
