There is something very appealing about that "everything looks like padding" look in Star Wars designs. Very pleasant but still hard and solid looking.

You're right. It does somehow feel much more livable and 'homey' than, say, Star Trek ship interiors. Odd that.

Yeah, there is sort of a swing from the original. Though That depends on the show. TNG was rather strange but it had a warm pallet and more (by there own admission) a sort of Aztec-deco look to the design to sort of off set the cardboard sets of the original series and everything after that has been sort of blueish grey pallet which seems rather off putting.Β
Also The Millennium Falcon had the idea of "camper in space" so it has that appeal I suppose. sort of weird compromise of Star Trek design with Nostromos sensibilities and utility.
