A wonderful piece of work , I've always fancied trying my hand at working with clay but wouldnt have a clue where to start.

What kind of clay is this?

That makes sense. Someone recommended paperclay to me just the other day.

I highly recommend it. So far I've worked with Laguna's B-mix with grog paperclay and their Max's Raku paperclay. The b-mix is cone 10, and the Max's if cone 5 to cone 10. Also, the Max's is very groggy, very textural, while the B is smoother. The paperclay doesn't tighten up during glaze firing like the reg clay, so if you want a really smooth and "tightly" vitrified surface you might want to stick to reg clay.

Good deal. How well do they hold up with large/heavy pieces? Say, 25 inches x 18 inches x 7 inches. (That's h x w x d)

I'll let you know about the b-mix after I have this box fired. I'm curious about warping and cracking and the like. It will be a couple of weeks before that happens - I am firing it at a community college and have to wait for a full kiln load before it goes in. I have bisqued a piece in the Max's, and it was maybe 15x10x8 (estimate only) and it did really well and was quite thin-walled.

Good deal! Thank God for small test kilns; otherwise, I'd never get anything done.
