This is one of those fiery blobs of magma from the Super Mario games that jump up and down out of the lava. They used to be called "Podoboos", but their name was changed by Nintendo at some point to "Lava Bubble":www.mariowiki.com/Lava_Bubble
Personally, I prefer the name "Podoboo" because of how bizarre it is! Are they actually related to the Boo ghosts? Who knows! Everything in Mario seems to have eyes, which I guess means that they are alive? The hills... the clouds... even the mushrooms Mario eats! o_O
