An interior designer contacted me about designing some features for a new premium hi-fi store. After sitting down with the client and the designer, we ended up coming up with the idea of a series of large Perspex panels, each screen-printed with a different classic film actor. Most of them are mainstream actors - Bogart, Bacall, Peck, Kidman, Gibson - but I really put the pressure on for a few esoteric actors to be included. So Vincent Price went in, as did Steve Martin, Richard Harris and Joanna Lumley (Patsy dahling!). They drew the line at Alan Rickman, unfortunately

Each panel has three colours (process black, titanium white, p428C) screened onto a sheet of red Perspex (p186C). The sheets measure 1500x3500mm, and are about 6mm thick. The designs are all orientated from the bottom right-hand corner.
The panels are being placed against walls that are painted in a blue-tinted white, so the reds and greys are going to 'pop' from the wall.

Screening is a relatively simple process, but because of the size of the panels I felt it best to keep the portraits as simple as possible. Block colour, heavy lines, generally stripped right back. I've been working on a yesterday deadline ('I needed the designs yesterday!') and as such have pretty much been sending the separations to the screen-printer each morning. The first panels have been dried and are ready to be installed next week.

This has generally been a great project. Most of my previous design work has been for the press, so it's been interesting to see my work go through a different medium process. Stressful, but interesting. heh
