Description 12x16" 30x40cm acrylic on hardboard

Ah! The perfect antidote to my 'character building' exercise of drawing and coloring: a painting without any detail! There's no place like home! I found the board this is painted on in a drawer, it had some sort of scraped off painting in blues on it, so I just went over it again with blues and made it into this scene.

Raymond Chandler wrote: “I guess maybe there are two types of writers, writers who write stories and writers who write writing.” (He was a writer of writing.) I think the same can be said for painters: painters who paint pictures and painters who paint paintings. I want to be a painter who paints paintings.

Blue seems to be the one color I can get away using like this... I tried one in golds browns and one in whites and greys and they did not quite work out as well (they're posted on my blog).

Amazing! What I find so great about this style is, that it invites the viewer to use his/her imagination. Every viewer will be able to see their own story in it.

Exactly, why should we artists have to do all the heavy lifting here? However, this is not a popular style of painting. Most people want something to look like something, the more realistically the better. And they value hard work: if it looks too easy, it is too easy. (This was "easy" and fun, but then I've been doing this stuff for half a century.) Genius doesn't buy you a cup of coffee. Still, everyone is entitled to decide for themselves what they like and don't like, so if I paint stuff I know people will not like, I've only myself to blame. However, I don't paint to sell, but to have fun, so I can paint pictures I like -- like this one -- without a worry in the world.
