12x16" 30x40cm acrylic on hardboardAn alternate title would be "Sparrows in the Grapevines"... Hey, where did the sparrows go? Actually, I'm glad they've flown: I couldn't have painted them to match the realism in the vines, and if I could, I could have used the painting as Christmas card. Yuck. A bullet dodged.
The idea for this piece came while I was sitting at my painting table wondering what to paint. Looking down on to my frosty garden and watching the sparrows flirt about the bare grape vines, I said, why not? The sparrows have taken over the bird houses on the vine posts, and unlike the wrens who owned them in years past, they stay all winter, so I think they're here to stay. I was really going to have the sparrows in the painting, but I decided that there was no way I could paint them in a way that would match the hard lines of the vines. I like the Taoist simplicity of this piece better without them.

I agree, it looks better without them because think the sparrows would have stolen the show. Ha ha, anyway, I like this simplicity and I get to focus on the branches.

Exactly. Besides, it was impossible to paint vague sparrows (the only way I could've painted them) with such crisp branches.

I ended up not leaving room to put more than one in, planning ahead is not one of my strong suits. Feel free to add them in your imagination though.

the texture and composition are amazing
and i like the touches of blue, it really brings out the frosty feeling
