Description
Or… when the trees start speaking SeedlingA picture based on the episode Going to Seed. I loved the interactions between these two, and while Apple Bloom’s been my favorite pony for quite some time, this episode made me realize that I really like these two sisters together.
I spent quite a bit longer on this picture than ones in the past (at this point I’m kinda sick of this pic lol), and it made me realize that I need a lot of practice when it comes to scenery and lighting. I guess you don’t git gud at these things overnight though. If anyone has any tips or critique, I’d love to hear it.

Good use of blue for the background and grass. I know the few times I try to draw I get much too caught up in the conventional and archetypal concepts of colour (trees must be brown and green, fire must be orange and red, etc) to properly take lighting into account, and even more so for mood.

Thanks. I mostly went with the blue to give a moonlit look to things, since trees aren't really green at night. Did a lot of fumbling around with color selection and filters.

One thing I've learned from both my mini-painting and really looking at the trees around me, rather than what I think they look like, is that bark is mostly grey, with hints of green and orange, rather than actual brown. At night, a tree is basically a silhouette, black.

Right now it's tough for me to take in my surroundings and really translate that to art. Usually it comes down to looking at references, and it always feels like I can't find enough.
Picking out the bark color was kinda tough here. Again, I did want those trees to look moonlit and shaded the top vs. bottom of them appropriately, but maybe I could've toned that down and instead had that silhouetted against a slightly brighter and more starry sky.

Try out looking at Magic Card art, especially lands. There's a ton of variety and full art versions aren't toooo hard to come by with some clever searching.

You're right, I did a quick search and there's some really nice scenery in there.
I just wish there was a convenient place for image/art refs, like Google image search with booru organization.

Booru organization would be a blessing.
