I've been drawing since I can remember, so basically forever. The second someone gave me a pencil. Once I somewhat decided in my child mind I wanted to draw as the pros did, I began tracing Disney books, then drawing on my own. Later on, I was introduced to the world of drawing manga with Dragon Ball, Saint Seya and especially Sailor Moon, which I spend many hours drawing.
I had no lessons, per se, except the ones you get at school where you have to draw perspectives and busts or whatever, but they didn't teach me much except the importance of chiaro-oscuro exaggeration in black and white pencil (or other) work.
I also bought some books about drawing, but the bottomline is I'm very much self-taught.
It's a question of practice and drawing what yu observe. I might not draw as much now, but any time I'm not doing anything, no matter where I am, I'm always observing and analysing how bodies move, how the light intereacts with objects and nature. It all serves its purpose eventually.
Of course, taking photo references also spare you some time and allow you to be 100% faithfull to what you desire to draw, but some things you acquire instinctively after observing them.
