The shape and the pattern are similar to the apple. Yep it could be possible that it isn't. Maybe it's another kind of artifact.

I hoped Conner would use the apple against the Templars one day. He didn't. At least Desmond did near the end though, and Conner had animal powers in the DLC that were so badass they shouldn't be mentioned.
