I noticed this tip of the cap to the original story in the movie where Bumblebee was rebuilt as Goldbug. This particular G1 nod likely caused a bit of confusion to new fans who might not have seen the idea behind the transformation.Related content

With the exception of the recent IDW comic continuity, yes they are. Even the original Hasbro tech specs called Goldbug an upgraded version of BB.
