Description
I made this for my thesis show. It was a lot of fun to figure out how to make a fully functioning guillotine from scratch. It was about 5 feet tall, which would be a lot shorter in height than a real one.Related content

Thanks... it was taken in the gallery at my show. It is more fun to play with it in person...

I usually see small guillotines... actually, no, I don't usually see small guillotines. It'd be for yakuzas, no?

Japanese organised gangsters. If one of them commits a serious fault, he is forced to chop off one of his fingers.

Ouch! It would take off a finger in a jif!

Indeed.
In a video game, I saw a miniature guillotine used to cut the heads off fishes... because it is meant to be French cuisine.

Would make an interesting conversation piece - when inviting over the neighbors... and if they do not find the humor... well then it makes it easier to get new neighbors...

Yes! It was not as hard as you might think... except the release mechanism was a challenge. Thank you for looking and commenting!

3tm, It was a lot of fun. I may build another someday. You just don't know how good it feels to pull the release mechanism. *snick* -- and the sound of the blade falling, it was an awesome piece to see it work.
I wish I could see a real one. I read about the Halifax gibbet, and the apparatus was over 60 feet tall, and was said to shoot the head into the audience.

did you try to cut anything with it? anything?

Yes. No flesh... but it would snap a piece of maple wood. To make it cut better it would need to be taller than 5 or so feet. Wouldn't that be awful, if it cut your head like 3/4 of the way off? ouch!

When the blade came down, it hit so hard the whole guillotine jumped. The blade was a quarter inch thick, and sharpened. eek!

No, actually I dismatled it after my thesis show. But it could be reassembled if a situation presented itself... *smirk*
