Description
I made this for my thesis show. It was a lot of fun to figure out how to make a fully functioning guillotine from scratch. It was about 5 feet tall, which would be a lot shorter in height than a real one.Related content

Thanks! It was an interesting item to build.

Be SURE to have it destroyed while you yet live, lest it fall into dark hands after you are gone !

Thank you, it was an emotional thing, to build that, in the end, I destroyed it. It broke me.

That's too bad. If it wasn't so hard you could make another one. I plan to make one someday, you kinda inspired me.

It was not very complicated, just a bit time consuming. The only hard part was the mechanism that triggers it. You might like to try it! Be careful with it haha!

This is just beautiful. I made one once and it was about 10 inch tall, and can not be compared to this amazing piece. Where did you get the blade?

Thank you! I made the blade from plate steel, cut it with an abrasive blade and sharpened with a grinder. They are really fun to make, as in challenging.

You gotta build another one. But this time, make it a little bigger. I'll pay you for it. Then I can gather some armed zealots & start my own revolution, complete with purges.
Yes, I was joking.

...I made a guillotine once... but it was like six inches tall and made of wood and razor blades... Then my brother started using it to chop off the heads of my voodoo dolls and I burned it..
I would be terrifyed of a real one, even if it was smaller that the proper-sized guillotines... -shudders-
Primarily 'cause I almost went and hacked off my finger... =\

I was super afraid of mine too. I dismantled it after the show. I had 2 year olds at the time. The though of them.... *shivers*

Mmhmm.
It must be sad for you to be repeated that over and over again.
You've said that in a lot of other comments.
Two year olds and guillotines versus an eleven year old MAKING a guillotine... hn.

Oops... I did not realize... I have not looked at this "thread" of comments in months... I wasn't sad about this piece. And not really creeped out. Just nervous of someone else getting hurt by it. I know I could have never forgiven myself if that had happened. Do you remember the little guillotine on the Adams Family Movie with Christina Ricci. XD Good Times!
Mostly I was really happy that it worked!

The little guillotine was funny in the Addam's family! Very musch so.
Mmhm. When they work, you can quite easily scare the people you dislike. It's quite amusing.

Sweet
My neighbor in Russia made one, looked just like the original! And worked like it to.
The blade went down free fall, very charming but it took some power to slide the bascule in. The lunette was perfect size though..
We never guillotined anything live but at one point of time I really wanted to behead a homeless dog that wouldnt shut up at night.
Great work, brings me back good memories.

And yet still quite so creepy that you figured out how to make one
I'm not smart enough to figure out such things
sides...I really think it would freak my friends out if I spent my days at home trying to make a guillotine

If all your friends were artists they would think you are the bomb, not creepy. My firends thought it was way cool. But I liked it and I was the only one who mattered. It was creepy to me even. But if it wasn't I might worry about myself. It is hard to see a real one and not feel some sense of dread, which I surely did. I bet that you ARE smart enough to make one. I just read a lot, looked at a lot, and trial and error, until it worked. Never short change your brains my friend.

no it's one it took me a while to find from his electric chair series...i think-it was a while ago-but the same feeling is pervayed (spelling???) just the idea that something in the corner of a room not even on can change the entire mood of a room...i'm not sure that's what ol Andy was trying to get out of it but that's what i did

wow..so what actually did you base your thesis on?i'm really super curious because i'll be attending art college next year (hopefully) so it's nice to see the kinda things i'll be trying out...this reminds me a little of an andy warhol photo i studied called double silver disaster..how one object can change the entire mood of a room

My thesis was based on my ideas about childhood. About the loss of childhood before it is time for that to happen. My father died when I was 7 and suddenly I had to grow up and I never really worked all of that out until I started making my work about that in college.
I very much like pop art... I like Warhol and Lichenstein a lot... I saw some of the original warhols in Houston at a museum. They are quite beautiful.
About your thesis work. Make sure you are passionate. Write about your work. Talk to your profs... a thesis will develop!

Thanks for looking! Actually it went over great with everyone who saw it, at the show etc. I couldn't conscious keeping it, I had a 2 year old at the time, and was horrified, at the thought of him messing with it. In fact I was quite deeply disturbed by that thought. I did build a lock into the mechanism, so It couldn't be used without me allowing someone to, however, so powerful was my fear of my child getting hurt, that I did dismantle it.
I think I would like to build one again though.
