Description
This piece is from my thesis work. It is a screenprint (silk screen) on wood. Materials: Wood, ink, varnish. In my screenprints I often make one-off's like this one rather than print a series (set).Photograph is vintage... very old.

I like this one a lot. It's powerful! Everything is "black and white" and then suddenly! color! BWOOSH!!
(also, the texture adds a neat little effect)

Thank You! You have no Idea how fun it was putting that red on, just pouring it out like blood!

what inspired this? when i see it i think of people watching a car accident, with the bloody red

I love disaster shots... Especially old stuff. I don't think a pic of a wrecked toyota would do much for me though... Grand scale. Likey. I was simply inspired by the pic, which is very old. The red? It just seemed Right.

yeah, i meant the theme, maybe like people watching disaster because its not them. i agree a toyota would be much less dramatic. red definitely fits

I have some kind of twisted love affair with disaster. I can't find enough good disaster images to suit me. I feel like my childhood was disasterous and I feel most comforted when I can project that emotion and all it entails.
I like sadness in imagery.
It makes me feel.
And what do I feel?
Validated
By the awful things
I feel my
mortality
and maybe
maybe...
I feel more
alive like that, scared, sad.

I know, you can't see it from my gallery, but the what i like most in art is confrontation, because it adds intensity to a peice. There is nothing wrong with beautiful nature scenes, but I often find the darker and angrier art to be more to my liking.

littleblackduck In reply to salparadiso [2006-12-08 02:57:11 +0000 UTC]
I sold it for $200 or $300 I don't remember. It was more than just a print though.. It came out from the wall in a three dimensional fashion, so there was some additional detail woodwork... on the sides.

man, your stuff is cool. everybody on here is into digital it seems, and here you have all kinds of 3d components, and finger painted screen ink. very cool

littleblackduck In reply to salparadiso [2006-12-08 03:28:07 +0000 UTC]
Thanks... I imagine there are more digital artists because it is convenient. Printmaking is involved, equipment intensive, time consuming and expensive.
But the result is quite different than purely digital work. I respect digital work, but I need more than that for me. Another thing, some of my stuff is much better in person. It has a tactile quality that is lost in the photo... My print constructions are functioning objects many of them...
Thank you for the compliments!!!

salparadiso In reply to littleblackduck [2006-12-08 05:09:00 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I can tell that your stuff is even better in person (thats a problem with an art website). And that is definitely true about printmaking, I remember waiting for one of my first screens to dry and it sucked. I just wanted to start printing. And then you've got the cleaning. But it's usually worth it when you run off a good print.

One thing that is lost in translation is the subtle colors and passes. I often have very subtle shades of grey that just do not come across in the photograph of the work. And on my constructions, I would have to take 6 or 8 photos to see all of the details... There are often things on the sides, underneath other images where pieces are broken or voids, you have to get up close and personal to see my constructed works.
Thank you for all of this feedback. It is so much appreciated!

Really cool perspective on the way of looking at vintage photography... like the red as a way of display the mayhem!

littleblackduck In reply to serpentwitch [2006-12-02 00:57:46 +0000 UTC]
It is a photgraph, scanned, reprinted in a coarse halftone pattern from photoshop, and then silkcreened onto a wood surface and the red is hand colored, not printed. Thanks!

Waw..sounds complicated^^ two thumbs up for you

littleblackduck In reply to serpentwitch [2006-12-02 01:11:34 +0000 UTC]
Probably sounds more complex than it is. Printmaking (silk screen, linocut, etching, lithography...) all those processes are pretty involved and take a long time. But you get used to them as anything else. They are not as 'direct' ways of working like drawing, photography, and painting, and digital work. It is more process oriented and removed. Thank you for the compliment!

Bizarre... like the rail coming on out at us... and the suit, got to wear a suit, to keep everything "normal" even when confronted with the twisted rails and a massive derailment... keeps everything in perspective.

Yes, wood can be abused more, and you don't have to keep it as clean, it doesn't have to be framed, it can be broken, cut into, smeared... on and on...
